WWOOF stands for Willing Workers on Organic Farms or World-Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. Learn about the extra-ordinary concept of spreading awareness and knowledge about organic farming.
What is WWOOF?
WWOOFing is volunteering to work on organic farms to learn the principles involved in organic farming. A WWOOFer is a volunteer who works on an organic farm for a few hours (generally 5-6 hours a day) in exchange of food, bed and learning experience.
Aims of WWOOF
WWOOF aims at providing an enhanced learning experience for the WWOOFers on organic farms. Almost every WWOOF organization lists the aims of WWOOF on its website.
Tips for WWOOFers
Ask the host about the kind of work you will be supposed to do, work hours, other expected WWOOFers, family members of the host, etc.
Tips for WWOOF Hosts
Enquire about the WWOOFers arrival: WWOOFers communicate a number of hosts at a time and in many cases do not communicate if they do not intend to turn-up. If you are really banking on the WWOOFers’ help, you can confirm their status a week before their arrival.
Is WWOOFing Always a Pleasant Experience?
There are a few cases when WWOOFing results in a bad experience. Some hosts do not provide work related to organic farming and ask the WWOOFer to do completely unrelated work.
Myths about WWOOF
Most of the WWOOFers are novice at organic farming and the help that you get is inexperienced and inefficient. If you have a genuine interest in spreading a word about organic farming and interacting with new people; then only you will benefit the most from WWOOF.
