Home remedies for anal itching include petroleum jelly, using damp toilet paper, avoiding scented soaps, diet control, etc. Intense itching problem caused basically around the region of anus is termed as anal itching. The entire itching is accompanied with a very strong desire to scratch the area. Anal itching might be a colloquial problem but at the same time, it’s very annoying. It mostly occurs in men. The concrete reason behind the cause of anal itching has not been identified as such. 

Anal itching is also known as Pruritus ani. Some of the basic reasons, which cause anal itching, are moisture, pressure created due to sitting for long hours and abrasion produced due to clothing. Since, its one of the most common disorders faced by people, there has been various measures of self care treatment, which can actually curb it.

The main symptoms of anal itching, as provided by Mayo Clinic are

  • Soreness
  • Burning sensation

 Anal itching is caused due to a variety of factors like

  • Dry skin, which is prone to happen due to the aging of skin
  • Excessive moisture due to sticky stools and sweating
  • Chemical irritants
  • Anal tumours
  • Fissures and abrasions
  • Yeast infections
  • Skin disorders
  • Laxatives
     
    The regular treatment of anal itching differs from person to person on the basis of the very cause of the problem. Some of the mostly practiced methods in treatment are adopting self care measures, changing the diet and infection treatment. According to a special article at CNN, medications are also a vital component of the treatment plan. OTC ointment containing Preparation H and Cortaid can be used to reduce anal itching and inflammation. Ointments which contain zinc oxide also are great relief to itching. 

With self care and home remedies, people can actually obtain relief from anal itching in less than a month’s time. Remedies for anal itching includes pick up petroleum jelly, wiping it clean, using damp toilet paper, drying your bottom well, saying “NO” to scented soaps and steroid cream, diet control and stress control.

  • Petroleum Jelly: This is the quickest way to pacify itching. It is well accepted by a leading gastroenterologist. Though, it is not reliable for a permanent relief. Whenever, it itches apply the petroleum jelly carefully to soothe it.
  • Wipe it Clean: Wipe your anus regularly. If you just wipe your anus after the bowel, it may lead to irritation. Don’t pull up your underwear, until there are traces of stool on the toilet paper. If you don’t wipe it well this may lead to severe itching and reddening of the anus.
  • Use Damp Toilet Paper: It is not possible to clean the stool with a dry toilet paper. Damp it before you use it to clean your bowel. Many a times the sticky stool is there at your anus. It may not get clean even though you have wiped it quite a few times. In such a case damp toilet paper is better. It reduces the chances of anal itching.
  • Dry your Bottom Well: Always make sure that you dry your bottom well. A wet bottom may irritate the anus. Use baby powder to keep it dry. You can even dry it with a throwaway cotton ball. The wet bottom may lead to skin irritation, which will result in the anal itching.
  • No to Scented Soaps: The soaps which are perfumed or deodorized should not be used. They, in most cases, cause irritation at the sensitive skin. To have itch free rectum make use of unscented soaps.
  • No Steroid Cream: The steroids cream should not be used on the sensitive skin. It may damage the skin. This cream thins out the skin which leads to breakage. Without the doctors advice the Hydrocortisone cream should not be used for more than seven to ten days. Never apply any cream to a young child of two years without doctor’s prescription. It may be hazardous for the child health.
  • Diet Control: If you have anal itching, avoid sodas, liquor, beer, beverages and food rich in Vitamin C and spicy food. Avoid them for at least two weeks. Then you can reintroduce these food items gradually. As and when you start their intake again, take a notice of what causes the itching if it does.
  • Stress Control:  It is one of the best and the easiest ways to overcome the anal itching. It not only relieves you from itching, but also gives you mental rest.

This problem can be caused in children with parasites, by getting rid of them the problem will stop.
