making rosemary oil at home

Hello Julie

In order to separate rosemary (and many others) essential oil you have to do what is called a \"steam distillation.\" This involves passing steam through the plant mass. The steam releases the desired oils from the plant mass and it is carried over with the steam to the collection vessel.

You could cheat and boil up some rosemary in a pot and collect the oil that forms on top of the water, but you will probably lose any volatile portions of the oil to the surrounding environment as it sits atop the hot water.

My personal recommendation is to buy a proper lab-type set up if you wish to make your own essential oils. I bought one from crucible.org Including the water pump (very important- make sure you buy it) and the extra adaptor kit it cost me about $500, and was worth every penny. Just follow the instructions. It is easy to assemble and use, even if you don\'t work in a lab like me. It is also safe- it only comes with a hotplate like on your stove so there is no way you can overheat the water and make your still blow up!

Hope this helps

feline asthma

i have a cat who i have tried various treatments for, but that are not cutting to the root of the problem, they\'re just treating the symptoms. i have recently looked into homeopathic remedies and have only tried magnesium and vitamin b-12 which have relieved some symptoms (the severe asthma attacks) but my oreo is still not back to normal. i want to procure a treatment from the rosemary plant that i have in my back yard, and now realize why he actually likes the plant so much. he is really in bad shape and the vet seems to know way less than i do about possible treatments (especially long term) for my cat. if anyone knows a good method of administering rosemary as a treatment for respiratory disorders such as asthma please let me know. it has been very frustrating for me and the vets are unsympathetic and know nothing about homeopathic remedies.

Apparently, the best and only essential oil to offer to your cat is Frankincense. You could put a drop on a cotton cosmetic pad or something similar and put that near or in your cat\'s bed. Also I know of a fantastic caring vet who will treat your pet homeopathically. she is in Shevington, near Wigan, hope this helps
