The formation of WWOOF India signifies the new initiative taken by the international WWOOF community and WWOOF Nepal to spread the WWOOF movement. WWOOF India has started its operations through its office in Uttaranchal state. Mr. Regmi of WWOOF Nepal has played an instrumental role in bringing WWOOF to the Indian subcontinent. He formed WWOOF Nepal in 2003 and then WWOOF India. WWOOF India is now coordinated by Mr. Harish Tewari with the help of the NGO Sewak. Before the formation of WWOOF India, WWOOFing activity in India was coordinated by WWOOF Independents, which had a list of 18 hosts from India. Mr. Tewari is gradually involving more organic farmers from India into WWOOF. He is able to provide valuable guidance to new organic farmers due to his vast experience in organic farming and knowledge of Indian organic certification system. Organic farming in India has been practiced by farmers since thousands of years. The great Indus Valley civilization thrived on organic farming practices. This continued till 1970s, after which chemical farming was encouraged by the government to increase food production in the country. The Indian government established factories for manufacturing chemical fertilizers and pesticides and provided subsidies to the farmers to purchase them during the era generally called as green revolution. The positive effects of chemical farming were immediately seen, with India producing surplus food grains. However, due to the apparent benefits of organic farming, people are now shifting to organic farming again. WWOOF India will add momentum to the organic movement in India. WWOOF India presents WWOOFers from different parts of the world an opportunity to experience the diverse culture of the country. Living in rural India will enable you to witness simple living which is both culturally and spiritually rich. To WWOOF in India, you need to become a member of WWOOF India. The membership fee of WWOOF India is $20 for a single person and $30 for a couple.
