Organic Coconut Oil
The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which is claimed to help in dealing with viruses and bacteria causing diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV.Brown Coconut It helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia lamblia. As a result of these various health benefits of coconut oil, though its exact mechanism of action was unknown, it has been extensively used in Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicinal system.

Coconut oil is often preferred by athletes and body builders and by those who are dieting. The reason behind this being that coconut oil contains lesser calories than other oils, its fat content is easily converted into energy and it does not lead to accumulation of fat in the heart and arteries. Coconut oil helps in boosting energy and endurance, and enhances the performance of athletes.

Coconut Oil Recipes

Composition: Coconut oil consists of more than ninety percent of saturated fats (Don’t panic! First read to the last word. Your opinion may change), with traces of few unsaturated fatty acids, such as monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Virgin Coconut Oil is no different from this. Let us have a bit detailed study of this.

  • The Saturated Fatty Acids: Most of them are Medium Chain Triglycerides, which are supposed to assimilate well. Lauric Acid is the chief contributor, with more than forty percent of the share, followed by Capric Acid, Caprylic Acid, Myristic Acid and Palmitic.
  • The Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids: Linoleic Acid.
  • The Monounsaturated Fatty Acids: Oleic Acid.
  • The Poly-phenols: Gallic Acid, which is phenolic acid. These poly-phenols are supposed to be responsible for the fragrance and the taste of Coconut Oil and Virgin Coconut Oil is rich in these poly-phenols.
  • Certain derivatives of fatty acid like Betaines, Ethanolamide, Ethoxylates, Fatty Esters, Fatty Polysorbates, Monoglycerides and Polyol Esters.
  • Fatty Chlorides, Fatty Alcohol Sulphate and Fatty Alcohol Ether Sulphate, all of which are derivatives of Fatty Alcohols.
  • Vitamins (predominantly Vitamin-E) and minerals.
  • A bit of moisture.

Health benefits of coconut oil include the following:
  • Hair Care: Coconut oil is one of the best natural nutrition for hair. It helps in healthy growth of hair providing them a shinny complexion. Regular massage of the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is free of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs, even if your scalp is dry. Coconut oil is extensively used in the Indian sub-continent for hair care. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. It is therefore used as hair care oil and used in manufacturing various conditioners, and dandruff relief creams. Coconut oil is normally applied topically for hair care.
  • Stress Relief: Coconut oil is very soothing and hence it helps in removing stress. Applying coconut oil to the head followed with a gentle massage helps in removing mental fatigue.
  • Skin Care: Coconut oil is excellent massage oil for the skin as well. It acts as an effective moisturizer on all types of skins including dry skin. The benefit of coconut oil on the skin is comparable to that of mineral oil. Further, unlike mineral oil, there is no chance of having any adverse side effects on the skin with the application of coconut oil. Coconut oil therefore is a safe solution for preventing dryness and flaking of skin. It also delays wrinkles, and sagging of skin which normally become prominent with age. Coconut oil also helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. Therefore coconut oil forms the basic ingredient of various body care products such as soaps, lotions, creams, etc., used for skin care.
  • Premature Aging: Coconut oil helps in preventing premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its antioxidant properties.
  • Heart Diseases: There is a misconception spread among many people that coconut oil is not good for the heart. This is because it contains a large quantity of saturated fats. However, coconut oil is beneficial for the heart. It contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps in preventing various heart problems including high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. The saturated fats present in coconut oil are not harmful as it happens in case of other vegetables oils. It does not lead to increase in LDL levels. It also reduces the incidence of injury in arteries and therefore helps in preventing atherosclerosis.
  • Weight Loss: Coconut oil is very useful in reducing weight. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight. It is also easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and enzymes systems. Further, it increases the body metabolism by removing stress on pancreases, thereby burning out more energy and helping obese and overweight people reduce their weight. Hence, people living in tropical coastal areas, who eat coconut oil daily as their primary cooking oil, are normally not fat, obese or overweight.
  • Pancreatitis: Coconut oil is also believed to be useful in treating pancreatitis.
  • Digestion: Internal use of coconut oil occurs primarily as cooking oil. Coconut oil helps in improving the digestive system and thus prevents various stomach and digestion related problems including irritable bowel syndrome. The saturated fats present in coconut oil have anti microbial properties and help in dealing with various bacteria, fungi, parasites, etc., that cause indigestion. Coconut oil also helps in absorption of other nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
  • CoconutsImmunity: Coconut oil is also good for the immune system. It strengthens the immune system as it contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid which have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which is claimed to help in dealing with viruses and bacteria causing diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. It helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia lamblia.
  • Healing: When applied on infections, it forms a chemical layer which protects the infected body part from external dust, air, fungi, bacteria and virus. Coconut oil is most effective on bruises as it speeds up the healing process by repairing damaged tissues.
  • Infections: Coconut oil is very effective against a variety of infections due to its antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. According to the Coconut Research Center, coconut oil kills viruses that cause influenza, measles, hepatitis, herpes, SARS, etc. It also kills bacteria that cause ulcers, throat infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and gonorrhea, etc. Coconut oil is also effective on fungi and yeast that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete's foot, thrush, diaper rash, etc.
  • Liver: The presence of medium chain triglycerides and fatty acids helps in preventing liver diseases as they substances are easily converted into energy when they reach the liver, thus reducing work load on the liver and also preventing accumulation of fat.
  • Kidney: Coconut oil helps in preventing kidney and gall bladder diseases. It also helps in dissolving kidney stones.
  • Diabetes: Coconut oil helps in controlling blood sugar, and improves the secretion of insulin. It also helps in effective utilization of blood glucose, thereby preventing and treating diabetes.
  • Bones: As mentioned earlier, coconut oil improves the ability of our body to absorb important minerals. These include calcium and magnesium which are necessary for development of bones. Thus coconut oil is very useful to women who are prone to osteoporosis after middle age.
  • Dental Care: Calcium is an important element present in teeth. Since coconut oil facilitates absorption of calcium by the body, it helps in getting strong teeth. Coconut oil also stops tooth decay.
  • HIV and Cancer: It is believed that coconut oil plays an instrumental role in reducing viral susceptibility of HIV and cancer patients.

I can't believe how well coconut oil works to relieve painful sunburn. When you apply it before going out
tanning you will have the richest darkest most golden suntan by simply applying it two hours before going
tanning in the sun. The oil wokrs for insect bites, as deorant, and as a mosquito repellent. It has many
wonderful uses aside from cooking.

Its probably a silly question but is it ok to use while pregnant?

Nicola, it's very healthy. I'm using it during my 3rd pregnancy. Healthy pregnancies and babies! :)
LisaMarie  - Coconut Oil for use in immunity and healing?   |2009-11-18 07:47:50
I have used this cooking in place of olive oil. How do you use this for immunity and/or healing? I don't
understand the injesting part of this? Its in its solid state on my shelf, what do you do? Take tablespoon
and swallow? and for healing, just rub it on the area? I was curious, if I had a sore throat, how would I
use coconut oil for possible treatment? (not saying that I would only use coconut oil) but I am very healthy
and want to use this, if I knew how to.
Me:-)  - Coconut oil   |2009-11-20 00:32:07
Coconut oil will become solid at cooler temps. Heat it up in warm water to make it liquid again! I keep mine
in a glass oil bottle (the one with the pour spout) then when I am ready to take it I put the glass bottle in
a bowl of hot water untill it is a liquid again. Then you just pour some on a spoon and eat it. Coconut oil
also comes in capsules if you don't like taking it that way.

I recently bought this product "coconut oil" from Wholefoods and is amazed how many health benefits it
has and not knowing I was using it all this time, being from the caribbean.I have used it in every way but not
taken orally and after reading all the comments I was pleased to know I could. On a daily basis I take 3-4
tablespoons per day and was wondering if it's a danger taking hiv meds or does it interfere with the meds when
taken 1-2 hrs later? Can it increase your blood pressure or cause your LDL to increase drastically? I'm a
healthy 39yrs male.Thanks in advance!
carina   |2009-11-21 02:14:39
instead of taking this like medicine, I would replace any olive or veggie oil in your diet with it.. making
eggs? skip the butter add a little oil to the pan. It can be over done, just like any other fats, so this is
one way to know you aren't over-doing things. Also, use for chapped skin (I use it on the back of my hands all
winter). It can also be used as a nice body oil for massage as it will become more liquid from body heat
alone. Hope that helps.

Sue   |2009-10-26 05:40:06
Crazy question, not that I want to take away from all the positive aspects of coconut oil, but....
I was
told to use coconut oil in my hair to add moisture after having highlights. Is there any way of getting the
absorbed coconut oil out of my hair and hopefully hair shaft to return it to its pre-conditioned state (and
without totally damaging my hair and color)? What I've found is that it has totally changed my texture and
weighed it down. (I, no doubt, used too much.) While it did add shine and thickness, what was soft and fluffy
has become somewhat sticky, dryer, and unable to expand or truly feel as though it's absorbing moisture. I am
desperate and so far unsuccessful at getting it out. I've recently read several articles claiming it is
absorbed into the hair shaft, unlike other oils. My fear, then, is that I will not be able to simply wash it
out, as I've already shampooed many times.

Guess my hair is overly porous, or I'm just odd.

Appreciate
any help in getting this out. Thanks so much for your time.
Sue

Chocl'late  - Wash your hair in ACV Cocktail   |2009-10-31 22:03:32
Hi,

I was reading last night about the benefits of washing your hair in ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar). Mix 1
tablespoon in 8 ounzes of water. It's used to clean hair and as a conditioner. I put it on my hair last night
for the 1st time as a 'pre-wash' and I love it. I'm an African American woman with naturally curly/kinky hair.
It made my hair soft, manageable, and cleaned it. I'm going to shampoo & condition today and use the ACV
cocktail at the end.

Good luck. I know that's frustrating. I did the same thing with some cheap olive oil
a few months ago. It took SEVERAL washes to get it all out over the course of a week!!!!
StaceyGayle  - Hair   |2009-11-10 01:51:30
Hi Chocl'late,

What brand of Apple Cider Vinegar did you use? How long did you leave it in your hair? I to
have naturally curly hair and I love it. Thanks in advance.

Try using Dawn dish liquid as they use it on animals who are harmed by oil slicks/spills.

Lori  - coconut oil and chocolate milk..mmmmm   |2009-10-24 04:33:58
My boss had told us about coconut oil and so we all kind of got on the band wagon for a while. I am kind of
picky with tecture and such and something about the oil almost made me gag...even though it melts immediatley.
Anyway, I decided to try it with chocolate milk. Makes it easier to swallow and it tasts like an almond joy
(to me anyway). I don't take it daily, but when I do, my hands are softer my elbows look and feel softer, but
I really need to make it a bigger habit because if everyone is having luck with the thyroid thing....I am so
there! :)
Deirdre  - Even a great product is not a miracle cure-all   |2009-10-24 01:41:26
Please, those of you who are looking for alternatives to your medications, please discuss it with your doctor
before you alter your treatment plan. Remember, many medications are created based on the lessons of
naturally-occurring chemicals, and are carefully engineered and tested to improve upon the results that you
might get from a naturally occurring substance.

Also, look into the existing causes and treatments for your
ailment. Shingles, for example, is caused by the chickenpox virus. The oil may help with your external
symptoms, but it is certainly not going to combat the virus--your immune system must do that!

It's a good
thing that many people here want to take charge of your healthcare. Just remember that your doctor and his or
her many years of education and experience are a resource, and s/he is on your side. If you've read that
coconut oil can help with your ailment, ask your doctor to research it for you--they will be much more
reliable than anonymous strangers on the internet!

Best wishes on your healthcare needs! Deirdre
Tami  - misinformation   |2009-10-27 02:08:23
Do you really think that a medical doctor will say any thing but, well it won't help but it can't hurt? Stop
worshiping western medicine. All they do is mask symptoms and put people on synthetic medications with
horrible side effects for the rest of their lives. Listen Deirdre, follow the money trail...hospitals would
be bankrupted w/o pharm $$. I have never been helped by an MD. Lots of human experiments have ended up with
a mutilated body cuz of them. They often take the most invasive approach to further their own status. Now go
to westen price foundation and start reading with an open mind. you might be surprised.
dyan  - naturally occuring chemicals.......   |2009-11-16 05:12:08
I wasn't going to comment on this post, but just can't help myself. Doctors do not study nutritrion, they do
not learn how to heal, they learn how to treat symptoms of disease and how to CUT it out of your body. Not
everything is a disease, and much of it can be healed or controlled in natural ways. My 84 yr old mother, like
most seniors these days, was extremely over medicated. Nine drugs, 8 of which I proved she didn't need, only 1
we kept for her diabetes. She was very ill with side effects, and when I questioned the dr, they wrote more
scripts for the side effects. Within 2 1/2 weeks her side effects were gone along with the 8 drugs. Two of the
Alzheimer's drugs caused her blood pressure to rise and 1 actually caused dementia!!!! SO WHY GIVE IT FOR
ALZHEIMER'S? In my grandparents day all their medicine was natural, some they made themselves. DO talk to
other's about their experiences, do your own research, find a Naturopathic doctor. It has been my experience
with M.D.'s that they will NOT admit to NOT knowing about natural remedies, and tell you to stay away from
them. But those with the "god syndrome" will never look into anything they don't understand even if it
could help you. If they truly cared about our health, the DRUG companies would not be so rich! Chemicals do
not "naturally ocurr." And if it isn't NATURAL you shouldn't put it in your body. If you think I'm
blowing smoke, a team of doctors killed my downe syndrome brother last year. He had endocarditis, a staph
infection of a heart valve. A simple blood test would have shown this horrible condition by the very high
white cell count in his blood. THEY were negligent in their lack of treatment and allowing him to stroke and
die. Do I hate and distrust doctors? You bet I do, and I'm much healthier since I stopped going to them.
cherokeemoonrising  - Dyan   |2009-11-18 02:24:23
I am so sorry for your loss.
I too agree with you, They are no longer "Doctors" but
"practictioners" of the pharmacologist.
My daughter, since the age of 6 has had a aissue with her
stomache,
we spent countless hours, and money on "doctors" and she had no relief.
6 months ago, I
found a naturopathic office, and paid the 300.00 to see of they could figure something out, needless to say,
it took them looking at her fingernails, her eyes and her face, and they gave her ginger, cocnut oil, and
iron, and she has not had a problem with her stomache since.

I get so frustrated by this all. All
Practioners, once they graduate, it is all about the money, and no more studing or paying attention to who is
paying for there life style. We are all on this very path and I suggest, we stop,.....and look at what is
going on and STOP believing everything we are TOLD, and start thinking for ourselves.
Start reading, start
asking, if you dont feel you have the right answer, keep going. You'll find it.

I have been using coconut oil for years now. I am a model and I have to tell you, this is the one thing I MUST
have.

I take it internally, use it as a hair conditioner, lather my whole body with it after my showers, use
it to remove my makeup... I even give it to my puppy!

It has helped with stretch marks, acne, hair growth,
weight, energy levels...

I suffer from fibromyalgia... I have very few symptom days anymore. The longer I
take it the better I feel.

I tell EVERYBODY I know about coconut oil.

Imagine all of the money I would
have spent at the drug store to find all different things to do all of the wonderful things this oil has done
for me!!

This is some awesome oil! We use it in oatmeal in place of butter-add honey and cinnamon and if you are into
weight-lifting and want the extra protein, add fat-free cottage cheese-YUM! Also on toast, the oil to make
homemade granola, pancakes, blend into smoothies or protein shakes, etc. There is a book called THE COCONUT
OIL MIRACLE that is a great resource of info on the benefits of coconut oil. Try to balance your fat intake
with EFA's such as raw nuts, seeds, avacado, wild salmon, olive oil, or a good blend such as UDO'S Choice Oil
Blend (3-6-9) which also has some coconut oil in it. Look on u-tube for UDO ERASMUS who wrote the book FATS
THAT HEAL, FATS THAT KILL. 1 to 5 tablespoons a day is great. Also, use in place of lotion or add to lotion.

I melt the coconut oil every morning and put 1Tbsp in with one cup of V8 mango/peach fusion and 1 tbsp ground
flax seed; mix it up in the blender. And YUMMY!!! I have it every morning (and sometimes for an afternoon
pick me up) and I just love it. My hair/skin have improved in softness/shine. I am a diabetic and I think it
may even be helping my glucose readings. I was (am??) a diet coke addict and stopped drinking it several
months ago but did not find something to replace all the diet coke that I drank; really tuff as I do not like
water or juices. I do drink milk but all that has to be counted into my day. so coconut oil has helped me
add at least V8 fusions to my drinking repetoire.
