Organic Coffee Company
It has been a long time since coffee manufacturing and marketing companies began realizing the importance and demand of Organic Coffee and ventured into its production. Since then, thousands of such companies came into being who produced Organic Coffee. A company that produces or markets Organic Coffee is called an Organic Coffee Company.

But that is not all! There are lots of things to know about them. For example, what do they sell; what regulations they follow or should follow; who governs them; what are their responsibilities; what is their market share and profit; what is the future of such companies and so on. Some of you may be doubtful about the usefulness of such information and may have a “Who cares!” attitude towards it, but let me tell you, knowledge is power and it is the knowledge that helps you make the right choice, be it coffee or anything else. So, let us start with some of the very basic things and move on to bit complex ones. Here we go!

• Organic Coffee Company: An Organic Coffee Company is a company that produces or sells Organic Coffee or Organic Coffee based products. When the regular coffee (non-organic) coffee companies surveyed the market and found that the awareness of coffee consumers towards organic products is increasing steadily and they were looking for that “Organic” tag on every product they purchased and these “Organic” products (which was a brand new concept even half a century ago) were doing very well in the market and had a bright future; then they jumped into Organic Coffee production.
• What do they sell? An Organic Coffee Company sells organic coffee and products based on organic coffee. But what is this Organic Coffee? Without going into much detail, let me say that Organic Coffee is the coffee that is grown without using chemical fertilizers or pesticides and no chemical or synthetic reagents are used in its processing and packaging. Some Organic Coffee Companies have their own Organic Coffee Plantations while others buy it from the farmers who grow coffee organically. An Organic Coffee Company may have various blends and varieties of Organic Coffee to sell; such as Shade Grown or Bird Friendly Coffee, Organic Kona Coffee, Organic Pea Berry Coffee, Organic Gourmet Coffee and so on.

Over the last few years, as the demand for Organic Coffee rose tremendously in the market as a consequence of growing consciousness towards health and environment, more and more Organic Coffee Companies sprang into this market, some selling authentic organic coffee and some, regular non organic coffee under the tag of organic coffee. The reason behind this being obvious; Organic Coffee fetches more prices in the market. So, what do we do? How do we pick up the authentic ones? Here is the answer.
• Assurance of Authenticity: Governments and various regulatory bodies have made certain arrangements to check such fraudulent activities. You just cannot go and start selling some coffee under the tag “Organic”. You need to first follow certain criteria laid by the administration and these regulatory bodies and after satisfying them with your efforts, obtain a certificate of authenticity or Certificate of Organic Products from these bodies. It is then when you can display this certificate on your product’s package and claim that they are organic. And that is not all! You need to renew these certificates periodically with the concerned bodies. So, before you buy some Organic Coffee packed by a so called Organic Coffee Company, just look for these certificates. Do not buy it if the certifications are not there. These certificates are hard earned and there are provisions for severe penalties in case someone tries to fake them. So, certificates are essential.
• Responsibilities: An Organic Coffee Company has certain responsibilities towards the society; some of which are laid on it by the administration as its duties and some it should decide by itself ethically. This is important because when you are selling something edible, people’s health is at stake and a single small mistake can have disastrous consequences; both on the health of the consumers as well as on the reputation of the company, and once the reputation is gone, everything is lost. So, these companies need to be very careful about what they serve. These companies must ensure that the organic coffee they are selling in no case should contain chemical residues above the permissible limit prescribed for each grade. These grades are; “Hundred Percent Organic”, “Organic” and “Containing Organic Coffee”.
• Market Share: When this concept of “Organic Products” was just budding and spreading like wild fire among the health and environment conscious lot, a few companies foresaw the future, jumped into the production and got a boom overnight. Later on, various others followed their examples and also flourished. But situation is not as promising now as it was then, because now that thousands of Organic Coffee Companies have entered the arena, there is a severe competition. But still, one thing is for certain and that is the market for Organic Coffee has a bright future, just like all other organic products, due to growing awareness among people.
• Benefits: Apart from serving something which is directly or indirectly health and environment friendly and enjoying a higher price (indirectly means some more profit) in the market, an Organic Coffee Company has some more benefits. In some countries and jurisdictions, such a company enjoys certain relaxations in taxes and other regulations just because they do not cost heavy on the environment as they do not discharge toxic chemicals and encourage organic farming.
• Drawbacks: Hmmm…! I am afraid, there are none! Some may say that these companies have to suffer a low production of coffee (production of Organic Coffee is much lesser than that of normal coffee), but I say that this factor is compensated by the higher price of Organic Coffee in the market. Some may also say that they have to strictly follow some rules and regulations and have to undergo some headache renewing their certificates and licenses, but this can be called a drawback as that does not affect their profit and performance anyway. Rather, this exercise should be seen as their duty.
• The Big Players: Although this article is not intended towards promoting or advertising and it does not recommend any particular Organic Coffee Company, I thought to list here a few names which are much heard about.
