Does Organic Have a Legal Meaning? |

|
Yes, in most countries, using the word organic has legal significance and the organic label should be used only as per the organic standards of that country. The organic standards are legally enforceable if a manufacturer or processor uses the organic certification label.
The Guardian reported in August 2005 that there were some self-claimed organic shops in the UK which were selling conventional food using the organic labels. Environmental health officers fined these shop owners and ordered them to change the name of their shops.
Similarly, a grocer in Victoria, Canada was fined USD 2,000 in March 2003 for misleading people by labeling conventional food as organic.
