Organic Baby Wipes
Every household where there are babies, there is life, there are joys, there are spillages, there are dirty hands & muddy knees, there are draining noses and there is need for baby wipes; or better to say; Organic Baby Wipes. You need them every time.
You need them when you feed your baby and need to wipe those tiny drops or specs of baby food on his/her tiny lips; you need them to wipe their tiny noses; you need them to clean their dirty hands and knees after they have finished playing on the floor or in the garden; you need them when they pour some ketchup or sauce or soup on themselves and then start crying and you need them when they sneak in the bathroom and play with water. You need them at every step and they are indispensable in every household where there are babies.
For New Users: Baby Wipes are used in almost every household in the world where there are babies, although they may not look the same. In many parts of the world, particularly in the Indian Subcontinent, people use used (sometimes new) soft cloth pieces as baby wipes while in other parts, ready made baby wipes are sold in stores. A baby wipe is a piece of soft paper or cloth used for wiping and cleaning the baby from time to time. It is nothing complex. Baby Wipes are of following types;
- Cloth Wipes (Dry): These wipes are small pieces of soft cloth or towel.
- Cloth Wipes (Wet): Same as above but moistened with plain water or scented water.
- Paper Wipes: Wipes made up of soft paper. Only sold dry for obvious reasons.
- Disinfectant Wipes: They fall mostly under Wet Wipes (but can also be dry) and are dipped in any disinfectant liquid.
- Organic Baby Wipes: They are only cloth wipes with an organic origin. They are what this article is all about.
The Worries: Have you ever wondered that the wipes you are using on your baby is suitable for him/her at all or not? You might have not. This might be due to the reason that despite these baby wipes are always needed, you never considered this aspect so seriously. But let me tell you that this is a serious issue and more so just because these wipes are required so frequently. You must be thinking what went wrong and why I am after those harmless wipes. Okay! Let me tell you the truth then.
The Fact of the Wipes: All regular baby wipes are apparently harmless and they do not seem to pose any threat, but they are not absolutely innocent. The problem is not with their structure or hardness or misuse, but with the materials they are made up of. You never know the fiber and the colours they are using to make those regular baby wipes available in the market. They are synthetic in most cases. Some are made up of natural fibers too, but then they use synthetic colours. And this “Synthetic” stuff is the main culprit. The synthetic fibers, dyes, colours and disinfectants (if any) used in these wipes are not at all healthy for your baby. The baby wipes made of paper are worst. They should never be used on babies. Perhaps you know what stuff papers are made up of. Still, let me remind you that paper is nothing but mostly recycled garbage and soft woody matter of trees (anything that contains cellulose); beaten, boiled, sieved, highly bleached, thawed, dried, rolled and finally finished into white and apparently clean and harmless looking paper. Manufacturing of paper not only involves tremendous use of highly toxic and corrosive chemicals but also involves mass deforestation. Both of these activities have devastating effects on environment. Scented or disinfectant baby wipes should also be avoided because they also contain chemicals. Wet wipes may contain solution of soap, shampoo or detergent.
Time for Solution: Whatever I have written above is not to prompt you to stop using baby wipes. Rather, it was to tell you that there are some nice and totally safe baby wipes available out there. They are called Organic Baby Wipes. No! They are not some jungle stuff. They are as good, as clean and as sophisticated as any other baby wipe. They are made of organic raw materials and processed and packed organically. Organic Baby Wipes are predominantly cloth wipes made from organic natural fiber, and this time, anything other than cotton does not fit. Cotton has the best moisture absorption capacity among all the natural fibers and it is soft, non irritant and non allergenic too. The cotton used in Organic Baby Wipes is grown organically, that is, without using any chemical fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides, weedicides etc. This cotton is not bleached using chemicals and neither any other type of chemical is used in its processing. Finally, no chemical scents or disinfectants are added. So, what you get is a soft piece of cloth made of pure, natural organic cotton.
The Benefits: The benefits of using Organic Baby Wipes cannot be seen in a day. Just as the chemicals in non organic baby wipes take some time to show their adverse reactions, similarly the benefits of Organic Baby Wipes take some time to show. Your baby will be safe from the toxic chemicals and hence from skin irritations, slow poisoning, organic disorders, rashes etc. as long as you use them. Since these wipes do not have chemicals, there is no chance of them reacting with other substances and neither of their disintegration into air and getting inside the body through inhalation, food and water. That is indeed a big benefit but is invisible, and I think your baby deserves these benefits.
The Cost You Pay: Nothing comes free and the better ones come even costlier. Satisfaction comes when you get the value for your money. Like all other good things, Organic Baby Wipes are costlier than the non organic ones but they are worth the price. You need not worry here.
Availability: They are easily available in big cities, particularly in Europe and America and some developed Asian nations, where people are aware about organic way of life, have less time and ready to pay. The things are bit different in India and neighbouring countries (must be similar in similar economies) where people prefer to make them out of used or new cotton clothes and do not care if they are organic or not. But things are changing and Organic Baby Wipes are finding market in these places too. And then you always have your phone and internet where you can order them (costlier affair).
Certification: In Europe, America and few East Asian countries, these wipes often come certified by competent authorities and agencies and it is always better to pick those which have a “Hundred Percent Organic” tag on them.
So, think well and search well before you get your next pack of baby wipes. Try to pick Organic Baby Wipes.
