Are Large Corporations Threat to Organic Food Standards?
Though entry of these large corporations into the organic food segment is welcomed by some, there are others who are unhappy due to this event. Many people fear that large corporate such as Wal-Mart, Amazon, and Whole Foods Market may influence the standards for organic foods and lower them.
Others fear that the large corporations will also procure most of their food items from the developing countries. As a result organic farmers in the US will lose to competition from the farmers in these countries.
Some people are not happy about the double standards maintained by these corporations. Many small farmers and manufacturers venture into the organic food business due to their love for the environment and health benefits offered by organic food products. However, most of the large corporations have ventured into the organic industry only to seize the opportunity to earn higher profits. These companies have other businesses that affect the environment and human health significantly. For example, Krafts Foods is a subsidiary of Altria Group which is one of the largest cigarette manufacturers and brewers in the world through its Phillip Morris Companies Inc.
