Organic and Natural Food at Wal-Mart
The retail major Wal-Mart, which is one of the largest retailers of organic milk , is placing more organic food items on its shelf. The commitment shown by Wal-Mart towards organic food ensures a promising future for the industry. The chain is in the process of understanding consumer preferences and buying patterns by introducing about 400 organic products in its stores.
Wal-Mart has about 4,000 stores in the US and 2,200 stores in other countries. So you can imagine how much demand it can create for organic food . Availability of organic food has been a limiting factor in growth of the organic food industry. However, now with Wal-Mart expanding its organic product line, it is speculated that more people will have easy access to organic food , thus booming the industry.
Wal-Mart is also known for its ability to create competitiveness among the suppliers. A competition among the suppliers will result in lowering of prices of organic food . The retail chain is targeting to sell its organic food products just 10% over non-organic food items. This is very cheap compared to cost of organic food available in the market right now.
Wal-Mart is also shifting to organic sea food. It will encourage suppliers that catch wild fishery without using any chemicals. Organic fishing ensures a dual gain - the fish are free of chemicals and the environment is not harmed while fishing. It has already informed its sea food suppliers about its decision to purchase sea food that is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council.
