Eligibility for WWOOF Membership Print E-mail

WWOOF is a constructive activity and hence there are very few restrictions as to who can become a member. Normally the only criterion used for membership is age. Since working on a farm is unsuitable for children, children are not provided membership to WWOOF. The age limit varies according to the WWOOF organization. For example, the age limit for WWOOF Australia is 17 years, while the age limit for WWOOF New Zealand and WWOOF Canada is 16 years.

So what about children? Do they have to wait for years to learn organic farming through WWOOF? No. There are many hosts who are willing to accept children. However, they should be accompanied by guardians. For example WWOOF USA clearly mentions that if you are below 18 years of age, you should be accompanied by a legal guardian.

Here are answers to some common questions people have regarding eligibility:

  • I have physical disability. Can I become a WWOOF member?

WWOOFing requires working on a farm for about 5-6 hours a day. Since this is physical labor, you should ensure that you are physically fit to do the work.

  • I have psychiatric and psychological problems. Am I eligible for WWOOFing?

Since WWOOFing requires interacting with strangers and volunteering to do physical labor at a completely new location, it demands mental fitness as well. Hence it is advised that if you have psychiatric or psychological problems, you should normally not opt for WWOOFing.

  • Can I go WWOOFing in another country?

Yes. Membership to WWOOF organizations and WWOOFing in general is not restricted to people from any particular country, throughout the world. If you live in Spain and want to go WWOOFing in Uganda, you are always welcome as long as you find a willing host and secure a Visa.

  • Can I get a membership for my pet?

WWOOF membership is meant for humans only. If you have a pet, and want to take it along, just check with the hosts. Some hosts do allow pets. If you find a host who is willing to accept the pet, you can definitely take it.
