WWOOF Basics

WWOOF organizations play an important role of bringing the hosts and WWOOFers together. Without their presence, it would be really difficult for the WWOOFers to find a suitable host.

The role of WWOOF organizations is, however, limited to providing a list of hosts to the WWOOFers. Some WWOOFers are not clear about the roles and responsibilities of the WWOOF organisations and expect numerous other facilities from them.

A WWOOFer should remove the following misconceptions about WWOOF organizations, if he/she has any:

  • WWOOF organizations will contact the hosts for the WWOOFers: No. The responsibility of contacting the hosts lies with the WWOOFer. As said earlier, the organization will provide the list of hosts with their contact details and a description of their farm and family. This is the only responsibility of the organisation.
  • WWOOF organizations will arrange for a Visa for foreign WWOOFers: No. These organisations may provide some information about the type of Visa foreign WWOOFers should apply for in their country. However, making arrangement for the Visa is the responsibility of the WWOOFer and neither the WWOOF organization nor the host has to play any role with it.
  • WWOOF organizations will make lodging and travel arrangements for the WWOOFers from their home to the host’s farm: No. The WWOOFer has to make his/her own arrangements. The host will provide food and bed only when the WWOOFer is staying on the farm. Some hosts do provide an extra help by receiving the WWOOFer at the airport or railway station. But you should not expect this courtesy from every host.
  • Membership of one WWOOF organizations entitles you to a membership of other WWOOF organisations as well: No. Each WWOOF organisation has its own membership, with separate rules, fee structure and region of operation. Above all they have separate host lists.
  • In case of injury, loss or damage, the WWOOF organisation will compensate the WWOOFer: No. These organizations do not accept responsibility in case of any mishaps.
  • In case of an unsatisfactory experience, the WWOOF organization will compensate for the travel and other expenses incurred by the WWOOFer. No. Most WWOOFers have a good experience during their WWOOFing expeditions. However, in rare circumstances, when a host behaves in an unfriendly manner or becomes busy with personal work, the WWOOF organization cannot be held responsible.
  • WWOOF organizations make a lot of money from the entire WWOOFing activity: WWOOF groups have a variety of business structures (sole traders, not-for-profit limited company, informal network of volunteers, registered non profit associations). However they are committed to providing their host list as cheaply as possible. WWOOF groups aim to be financially sustainable rather than to make significant profits from provision of their host lists.
