WWOOF Basics

The advent of Information Technology and the developments in the field of telecommunications have drastically increased the speed of sharing information. We use paper for communication in very rare circumstances.

WWOOF organizations (almost all of them); however, prefer to use the age-old mail service to receive membership applications and dispatch their WWOOF booklet. Why do these organizations not use the Internet for membership? Currently, it takes about two to three weeks for a member to receive the WWOOF booklet. However, if e-membership is activated, WWOOFers can get access to the WWOOF booklet in a few minutes.

The reason for using postal services to activate the membership is that WWOOF is a close interaction between strangers. The hosts and WWOOFers have never met earlier and would probably not see each other again. The WWOOF host gives shelter and access to his farm and home to a stranger. Hence it becomes necessary to authenticate the information provided by a WWOOFer. A physical address can help in tracing back a WWOOFer and hence almost every WWOOF organization uses a postal address for dispatching the membership card.

Some WWOOF organizations such as WWOOF Canada now accept membership forms online. Further, there is no harm in providing the host directory on the Internet. Hence many organizations have uploaded a soft copy of their host directory on their website. These include WWOOF New Zealand, and WWOOF Korea. A username and password is provided to the member. Online format of the directory also enables faster updates in the directory. These organizations don’t have to wait for a year now to add or remove hosts.
