The formation of WWOOF India signifies the new initiative taken by the international WWOOF community and WWOOF Nepal to spread the WWOOF movement. WWOOF India has started its operations through the office of WWOOF Nepal.
Mr. Regmi has played an instrumental role in bringing WWOOF to the Indian subcontinent. He formed WWOOF Nepal in 2003 and now WWOOF India. WWOOF India will become a separate organization as of 1st January, 2007. WWOOF India has started spreading the WWOOF concept aggressively in India, and is in the process of expanding its list of hosts and WWOOFers.
Before the formation of WWOOF India, WWOOFing activity in India was coordinated by WWOOF Independents, which had a list of 18 hosts from India. Now WWOOF Nepal is managing the operations of WWOOF India. By 1st January, 2009, WWOOF India has to expand its list to 100 hosts and 200 volunteers for establishing its separate office in India, preferably New Delhi.
Organic farming in India has been practiced by farmers since thousands of years. The great Indus Valley civilization thrived on organic farming practices. This continued till 1970s, after which chemical farming was encouraged by the government to increase food production in the country. The Indian government established factories for manufacturing chemical fertilizers and pesticides and provided subsidies to the farmers to purchase them during the era generally called as green revolution. The positive effects of chemical farming were immediately seen, with India producing surplus food grains.
However, due to the apparent benefits of organic farming, people are now shifting to organic farming again. WWOOF India will add momentum to the organic movement in India.
WWOOF India presents WWOOFers from different parts of the world an opportunity to experience the diverse culture of the country. Living in rural India will enable you to witness simple living which is both culturally and spiritually rich.
