WWOOF Italia or WWOOF Italy has 260 farms on their list situated all over Italy from Aosta to Puglia and on the islands of Sardinia, Elba and Sicily. There is a great variety of choice eg: mountain refuges an hours walk from the main road and farms with no telephone or electricity; medium sized family run farms (the majority) and large farms of up to 500 hectares - we even have a castle on our list! Nearly all our hosts are Italian with a smattering of Germans, Dutch, Swiss and Brits and they mostly speak some English or another foreign language.

You could find yourself rounding up sheep on horseback in Molise (S.W Italy) tending to deer in Tuscany, cultivating bamboo, taking treks through the Umbrian or Sicilian hills, helping with school visits, making herb tinctures and tisanes, making bread and pasta to sell in local organic markets, tending to animals, picking olives or grapes, making wine, butchering the pig (this is optional!) making salami and sausages, alongside all the other mundane tasks such as gardening, weeding, harvesting and working in the fields. In the summer months a lot of farms make jams and preserves, dry fruit and herbs (many of which they sell under their own label). Italians are famous for their hospitality and good food, and where better to find these than staying with an Italian family on their farm?

The best times to come are in the autumn (September to early December) for the grape and olive harvests, and the spring (March to June) for the preparation of the vegetable garden, pruning and manuring. Having said this most farms take WWOOFers all year round as there is always work to be done on the farm.

Could you please tell me if there are any organic farms in Friuli on your list. I am 70 years old and in good health and are interested in spending some time on one of these farms. I also speak the language, both Italian and Friulano.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you
