by John Staughton (BASc, BFA) last updated -

The use of black seed oil for hair growth is gaining in popularity, as more and more evidence appears that it does, in fact, have many positive effects on hair.

Black Seed Oil

Black seed oil is a highly concentrated oil that is derived from black cumin seeds, which also go by the name black caraway seeds and fennel flower, among others. This oil is pressed or distilled from the seeds, leaving it with a very dense supply of nutrients, including linoleic acid, myristic acid, oleic acid, and palmitic acid, along with various other antioxidants and nutrients, such as B vitamins, iron, phosphorous, zinc, and copper. This oil has been in use for as many as 4,000 years, and remains a powerful and popular natural remedy, particularly for the hair. [1]

The specific composition of the oil makes it ideal for moisturizing and delivering nutrients to the areas of your scalp that need it most. While there are other topical and medicinal properties of this oil, it is perhaps best known as a hair oil.

How to Use Black Seed Oil for Hair Growth?

The most effective way of applying black seed oil for hair growth is to follow the simple instructions below. You can also use this oil in other moisturizing creams, in hair masks, or natural conditioners.

  • Step 1: Pour two tablespoons of black seed oil onto your palms and rub them together.
  • Step 2: Begin massaging your fingers and palms into your hair, rubbing down to the scalp.
  • Step 3: Initially focus on the scalp, before moving to the individual strands or areas of hair.
  • Step 4: Run your fingers from scalp to tip on as many hairs as possible.
  • Step 5: Keep the oil in your hair for 30-45 minutes, then rinse out with a gentle shampoo and pat your hair dry.

Black Seed Oil Benefits for Hair

The main benefits of black seed oil for hair include the following:

  • Preventing hair loss
  • Slowing down the aging process
  • Strengthening your hair
  • Reducing inflammation on the scalp.

Scalp Inflammation

The anti-inflammatory compounds found in black seed oil are able to eliminate signs of irritation from the scalp, particularly if you have been suffering from dandruff or other unwanted conditions. [2]

Hair Regrowth

By delivering nutrients directly to the hair follicles, this oil can stimulate the regrowth of hair, even if you have begun losing your hair, particularly if your follicles have simply shut down for one reason or another. [3]

Hair Loss

Not only will this oil regrow hair, but it will also prevent more hair loss. By reducing the brittleness of hair and improving follicle health, your hair will stay where you want to keep it – on your head! [4]

Anti-Aging

There is some evidence that regular use of this oil can also slow down the graying process, which is an excellent way to stay looking young without hair dyes. [5]

Stronger Hair

If your hair regularly breaks or if you are dealing with split ends, using this oil 2-3 times a week can show major results in the look and texture of your locks.
