What is Borderline Personality Disorder?
A borderline personality disorder is a mental health disorder in which the one suffering from it displays a pattern of certain feelings and behaviors. These behaviors can be erratic and cause problems in their day to day lives. While some compare BPD to PTSD, there are definite differences both in the causes, symptoms, and treatments. There are two main types of the disorder, borderline and impulsive, as well as numerous subtypes, but each individual case is different.
There are many symptoms of borderline personality disorder as per a research published by Klaus Lieb, MD, at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University of Freiburg Medical . They include the following:
- Rapid mood shifts
- Impulsive emotions
- Unstable behavioral patterns
- Challenges with relationships
- Issues with self-image
- Extreme fears
- A distorted sense of identity
- Fears of abandonment
- Substance abuse
- Suicidal thoughts/tendencies
The complex emotions and potentially destructive or obsessive relationships that people often form when suffering from a borderline personality disorder can make it difficult to diagnose or treat, and it can be challenging to convince certain sufferers to seek help or attempt to remedy the problem themselves.
According to the NIH, borderline personality disorder can be caused by a number of things, let’s take a look at them below.
- Childhood neglect
- Growing up surrounded by someone with a bipolar disorder or some other mental health issue
- Alteration in the brain chemicals
- Growing up with constant fear
- Physical abuse
- Emotional abuse
Common treatments include psychotherapy, but there is no pharmaceutical “cure”, simply medications to treat the symptoms, such as depression or anxiety. However, given the fragile emotional state of many BPD sufferers, these remedies can sometimes make things worse. Natural remedies and treatments are frequently turned to by individuals suffering from BPD or their loved ones, and some positive results have been achieved. While medical consultation is strongly suggested, at least for an initial diagnosis, you shouldn’t discount the power and potential effects of these remedies for borderline personality disorder.
