Alopecia occurs when the immune system attacks the follicles resulting in hair loss in different parts of the body. It happens because of an abnormality in the immune system that tends to attack its own body, resulting in disruption of normal hair growth. It is also associated with thyroid, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis, and could also occur among family members due to genetic conditions.
