Sun damage and smoking can make skin pores larger and allow oil to seep into it, thereby causing acne. Stress can also lead to acne in adults due to the release of cortisol that results in clogging of oil. In adults, hormonal changes result in the production of more oil, a phenomenon which frequently occurs during perimenopause. It can also happen right before periods in women and after giving birth.
