11 Benefits & Uses of CBD Oil

by John Staughton (BASc, BFA) last updated -

CBD oil or cannabidiol and hemp have been used for thousands of years as naturally growing herbs. Although their reputation as a drug has complicated the relationship between its users and the authorities in certain parts of the world.

CBD oil has become very popular and famous in the recent years due to the movement for legalized marijuana in certain countries.

In a statement released in June of 2018 by FDA, it states, “the FDA approved a purified form of the drug cannabidiol (CBD). The new product was approved to treat seizures associated with two rare, severe forms of epilepsy in patients two years of age and older”. [1]

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is made by mixing the extracted CBD or cannabidiol from the cannabis or marijuana plant (Cannabis Sativa) with coconut or hemp seed oil. CBD oil possesses cannabidiol; while THC is psychoactive, CBD is not, thereby helping relieve pain and depression, fighting cancer, and reducing anxiety. It also improves the quality of sleep, boosts appetite, and optimizes digestion.

What is Cannabis Essential Oil?

Pure undiluted cannabis essential oil is a green concentrated, sticky, resinous substance that is considered highly volatile. Its components are very powerful, including monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and other highly active organic compounds. It is extracted by steam distillation from the flowers and upper leaves of cannabis plants, which are in the Cannabis genus. The essential oil is primarily made and distributed from France and various other European countries, but its exportation is somewhat limited by, as mentioned above, the legal ramifications of what cannabis essential oil is derived from. [14]

Cannabis essential oil is one of the most unusual oils in the essential oil range, simply because of the plant from which it is derived.  However, cannabis essential oil is a beneficial essential oil and is widely considered one of the most effective oils for the alleviation of certain illnesses and conditions.

Apart from its extensive medical applications, it is also found in perfumes, soaps, creams, gels, salves, and candles, as well as in culinary preparations. Considering that this oil is so powerful, a very small amount is sufficient for it to be effective.

Hemp oil vs Cannabis Oil

No, hemp oil is not the same as cannabis oil. All-natural hemp oil is obtained by cold pressing of hemp seeds whereas cannabis oil is obtained by separating the resins from cannabis flowers. Their uses and chemical composition are quite different. Cannabis oil is much higher in THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content, which has certain effects, whereas hemp oil tends to be higher in CBD (cannabidiol) levels.

CBD Oil Benefits

CBD oil has a wide range of effects on health and has been connected to a diverse number of health problems, ranging from migraines and stress to lack of appetite and sex drive. CBD oil has even been connected to reducing the risk of certain cancers, as well as reducing pain, improving the conditions of the heart, and helping people get a good night’s sleep. There are a number of ways to use CBD oil, depending on what you want relief from.

CBD Oil for Pain

Research conducted by Ethan B Russo,  [15]GW Pharmaceuticals, WA, USA, suggests that CBD oil interacts with the protein cells in the body and sends chemical signals to your brain and immune system through a number of stimuli. This helps the cells positively respond to chronic pain. This oil is regularly suggested for people with inflammation and back pain because of its painkilling quality.

A survey led by the McGill University Health Centre in Canada revealed that cannabis use results in an improvement in non-cancer pain, sleep, and mood patterns. In the same survey, it also revealed that ‘high’ and dry mouth were the most commonly reported side effects. People who suffer from cancer also turn to cannabis-related options, including therapeutic grade CBD oil, when the pain of chemotherapy or the disease itself becomes unbearable. [16]

CBD Oil for Anxiety

One of the most popular and well-known uses of pure cannabis essential oil is to get relief from stress and anxiety, according to a report published in the Journal of Cannabis Therapeutics. The natural compounds found in this oil, including the famed THC, which is what gives cannabis the distinction of a drug in many countries, are very good for releasing pleasure hormones and relaxing the mind. It also helps in reducing stress and inducing a sense of calmness and relaxation. [17]

CBD oil is said to work with a brain receptor called CB1, which alters the serotonin levels in the body and thereby improves mental health.

CBD Oil for Cancer

Although there is some controversy over this and with a great deal of research still ongoing, early reports have shown that the active ingredients in cannabis essential oil can have preventive effects on cancer. It can also cause a reduction in tumor size, thereby making it easier to effectively fight cancer (more research required on this). [18]

CBD oil and cannabis oil are both known to reduce the symptoms and side effects of cancer. The presence of both THC and CBD helps in relieving the pain associated with cancer. According to research done by Hansen M., Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria, it also provides relief from the side effects of chemotherapy including nausea, vomiting, and anxiety. Reduces Signs of Acne

Research conducted by George Andrew Olah, a Nobel prize winner for chemistry, suggests that due to the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD oil, it helps in reducing the signs of acne. It also controls sebum production which reduces the oiliness on the skin and fights off the bacteria and inflammatory cytokines responsible for acne. [21]

The powerful components of cannabis essential oil are used to protect the skin. It can be consumed both internally and applied externally to enhance the cannabis effect. It can stimulate the shedding of dead skin and faster re-growth of healthy, glowing skin. Cannabis sativa seed oil is also known for preventing wrinkles, signs of aging, and protecting against eczema and psoriasis. [22] [23]

Improves Brain Health

Cannabis has shown to have positive effects on people suffering from epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. Research conducted in the University College of London suggests that it is also effective in dealing with multiple other neurological conditions like the Dravet syndrome and Parkinson’s disease. It prevents neuro-degeneration and cognitive decline, thereby helping those suffering from Alzheimer’s. [24] [25]

Topically applying some cannabis essential oil for headaches or at the temples or the spot of intensity for migraine can be an effective way to get relief. Many people turn to prescriptions for cannabis and cannabis essential oil due to its potent defense against crippling headaches and pain. [26]

Promotes Heart Health

The volatility in cannabis essential oil can also help improve heart health by balancing out the negative oils in your system. It can stimulate antioxidant processes as well by scraping off excess cholesterol and maximizing the health of your cardiovascular system. [27]

CBD oil also lowers high blood pressure and reduces the risk of stroke, heart attack, and metabolic syndrome. Research suggests that due to the presence of antioxidants in CBD, it helps fight oxidative stress and reduces heart-related ailments.

Reduces Glaucoma

In terms of eye health, cannabis and cannabis essential oil have been linked to a reduction in glaucoma and prevention of macular degeneration, according to a report published by Dr. John Merritt, Department of Ophthalmology School of Medicine, University of North Carolina. Eye health is one of the major reasons why people turn to cannabis essential oil as they age. [28]

CBD Oil for Sleep

For people who suffer from insomnia, constant anxiety during the night or simply struggle to get a sound, restful night of undisturbed sleep, cannabis sativa essential oil may work like a charm. However, according to a research report published by Dr. Ethan Russo, Director of Research for the International Cannabis and Cannabinoids Institute, terpenoids produce an “entourage effect”. [29]

In plain terms, this means that cannabis and THC products may have to be combined together to help the body relax. By relaxing the body and mind, and inducing a lower energy level, it will be easier to get your heart rate down and clear your head before a long night of peaceful sleep.

How to extract CBD Oil?

To extract CBD oil, a solvent extraction process is required, which returns roughly 3-5 grams of oil per ounce of flower product used. Using grain or isopropyl alcohol as a solvent, you can strain the result of the mixture, leaving CBD oil behind. It is a lengthy process, and in countries where cannabis is legal, there are many places to access high-quality CBD oil.

Word of Caution: Although this list clearly shows that cannabis essential oil can be an effective remedy for many common health conditions, it is still a potent chemical substance extracted from a plant with psychotropic substances. Therefore, you should always be very careful while using such an essential oil, including the amount you use and the conditions under which you use it. It can cause diarrhea, dry mouth, and fatigue in some people. Speak to a professional about mixing essential oils and present medications before adding any new elements to your health regimen.

While you are using any CBD or hemp derived products, it is important to check your state’s laws and guidelines for the same. Hemp-derived CBD products are illegal in the US on a federal level, but still legal in many states. If you are travelling, then make sure you comply with that city/state’s laws regarding the consumption and use of CBD. Remember that most CBD products are not FDA-approved and therefore may be sold illegally or with wrong labeling.
