Alcoholism refers to the urge to consume alcohol. As per an estimate, out of 17 million individuals who are addicted to alcohol, only 3 million or so are able to seek help and proper guidance to come out of this perpetual hangover. It has been one of the main reasons for driving accidents, violence, crime, and consistently destroys families. It is characterized by an enormous obsession to consume alcohol. This leads to a situation where the individual loses control over self and drinks to such an extent that leads to damaging their own body in serious ways. It is an uncontrollable condition and it is very important to make this type of person aware of the situation and help them to come out of it.

Alcoholism results in headaches, staggered speech, blurred vision, and a reduction in brain activity. Apart from this, it also causes weakness of muscles, imbalance in chemical equilibrium in the liver, and ulcers in the digestive lining. One may require medical assistance if the situation is not able to be handled by home remedies.

When someone needs help with alcoholism, he has the option to go for either home remedies or can turn to formal alcohol treatment programs. The Centre for Drug and Alcohol Programs at the Medical University of South Carolina states that alcoholism has nothing to do with the lack of will power in an individual; rather, the brain changes in such a way that they cannot live without alcohol. It affects both the function and structure of the brain, impairing control over emotions, and motivating unwise behavior. It does not happen in a few days. Rather, continued long use and abuse makes an individual addicted to alcohol.
