Though curable by simple home remedies, if the sores persist for a long time or get very painful, then a doctor should be consulted. Following are some useful home remedies for canker sores:


Consumption of garlic in the form of a paste or eating a clove as it is can help you get rid of canker sores. Garlic has proven anti-inflammatory properties and can also strengthen our immune system.


Fenugreek leaves are used for making an infusion and this is used for gargling purposes. Using this remedy twice a day is an effective canker sore treatment.

Coconut Milk

Milk extracted from coconuts, when gargled, is highly effective in the treatment of canker sores. This is due to its soothing effect. A review published in 2016 in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine elaborates on the use of coconut oil in traditional Indian medicine. The traditional remedy of oil pulling treatment was meant to improve oral hygiene. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the lauric acid can also help us to treat canker cores.


Cactus Juice

Cactus juice, when kept in the mouth for 20 seconds, has a drying effect on the sores. This results in the dehydration and shrinkage of the sores which ultimately helps in healing it. This should be done for 2 to 3 days for the complete elimination of canker sores.


Including yogurt in your daily diet can prove to be an effective remedy for the treatment of canker sores. According to The Doctors Book of Home Remedies, eating four tablespoons of plain yogurt can help in preventing canker sores. The Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria present in the yogurt counter the ‘bad’ bacteria that causes sores.

Tea Bag

Tea bag when dampened with warm water can help in the treatment of canker sores. This is due to the presence of tannin, a compound present in it, which helps relieve pain and inflammation.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Gargling with a solution made up of equal volumes of warm water and apple cider vinegar can help cure canker sores.


Apply alum twice a day over the sores. This heals the sores quickly and helps you get rid of the pain.

Plum Juice

Gargling with plum juice helps in obtaining relief from canker sores. You can also dip a cotton ball in plum juice and apply it over the affected areas.


Aloe pulp can be applied over canker sores to get relief from them. A review published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research recommends washing the mouth with 1–3 tablespoons of aloe vera juice and then swallowing it. This should be repeated three times a day.

Baking Powder

Baking soda is effective in reducing the number of bacteria in the mouth. Applying it directly or mixing a spoonful of baking soda in a cup of lukewarm water and rinsing with this mixture helps in treating canker sores.

Grape Juice

Extract grape juice by crushing grape seeds and mix it with water to prepare an effective mouthwash which is beneficial in treating canker sores.


Eating papaya regularly or applying papaya leaves on the affected area helps in quick relief from canker sores.

Turmeric Powder

Rinsing or gargling with a solution made by mixing 1/4 spoon of turmeric powder in a cup of lukewarm water helps in healing the sores quickly.
