Honey Powder Health Benefits & Recipe

by John Staughton (BASc, BFA) last updated -

For those with a sweet tooth, honey powder is an excellent, long-lasting health food that can provide many of the same benefits as regular honey. Before adding this dehydrated substance to your dietary regimen, however, you should understand what it contains, how to make it, and what potential health benefits it may provide.

What is Honey Powder?

Honey powder is a dehydrated form of natural honey and typically contains less than 2 percent of the typical liquid content of the traditional, liquid form of this golden sweetener. Since it is dehydrated, this powder has a much longer shelf life and is more versatile for adding in different recipes. In its powder form, honey powder is pure white and is often mistaken for corn flour. [9]

Most people use this dry form of honey as something healthy to sprinkle into their cereal, fruit salads, bread, cakes, and other forms of dessert. Many bakers and chefs turn to this powder when they are cooking something in which the liquid content needs to be less. Aside from its versatility in the kitchen, it also has several health benefits associated with it.

Honey Powder Benefits

The best benefits of this powder include weight loss, skincare, and digestion. It also dissolves quickly and can improve the flavor of various dishes. Let us look at the health benefits in detail.

Skin Care

Consuming honey powder or mixing it in other cosmetic applications is known to improve the appearance and health of the skin and reduce the signs of aging. [10]

Weight Loss

Although there are some carbohydrates and calories in this powder, it is better than traditional sugar as a sweetener. It also helps kickstart the metabolism, which can aid in weight loss. [11]

Aids Digestion

The anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory compounds found in honey powder are excellent for preventing and treating infections throughout the body, particularly in the stomach. It can also help reduce symptoms of constipation and cramping. [12]

Cooking

This powder is extremely versatile in the kitchen and can be kept for much longer than liquid honey. It also dissolves quickly and can be added into many different recipes for a milder sweetness.

How to Make Honey Powder?

Many people choose to make their honey powder, using a dehydrator or an oven. In the case of a dehydrator, you will want to spread a layer of honey, as thin as possible, on a baking sheet. If you are using the oven, keep the oven on the lowest temperature possible, slowly heating the honey for as long as 24 hours. Excess heat will denature the proteins and decrease the nutritional quality, so making this powder without a dehydrator can be a long process.

Organic Honey Powder

Quite simply, organic honey powder is a honey powder made from organic forms of honey, such as raw honey, manuka honey, clover honey, or acacia honey. Furthermore, if you are buying this powder, always be sure to check the origin and source to ensure that it is indeed organic powder, and hasn’t undergone extensive processing before being dehydrated.
