by John Staughton (BASc, BFA) last updated -

Using turmeric for dogs is an increasingly popular way to boost the health and immune protection of your canine companion.

Is Turmeric Safe for Dogs?

Turmeric is known as one of the most powerful herbs in the kitchen for human consumption, primarily because of its impressive concentration of curcumin, a strong antioxidant. When it comes to dogs, however, this spice can also protect their immune system and increase their antioxidant defenses. When used in moderation, this spice is perfectly safe for dogs and should be considered if your dog has certain inflammatory conditions or chronic diseases. [1]

Turmeric Benefits for Dogs

Turmeric, being an anti-inflammatory, has many amazing benefits for dogs including its ability to relieve pain, reduce blood clots, and prevent cataracts, among others.

Anti-Inflammatory

Dogs suffer from arthritis and inflammatory conditions just like people, but regularly using turmeric can help relieve that discomfort and keep your dogs pain-free as they age. [2]

Anticancer Potential

According to a 2017 study, turmeric root and rosemary extract may help induce apoptosis when it comes to preventing canine cancer. [3]

Gastrointestinal Distress

If your canine companion is suffering from diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome or any other gastrointestinal issue, the use of turmeric can clear that up quickly. However, in excess, turmeric can actually exacerbate these conditions.

Heart Health

Studies have found that the use of turmeric can help to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease, both in humans and in canines!

Blood Clots

Turmeric is well known to reduce the occurrence of blood clots in the body, which can boost heart health and lower the risk of strokes or heart attacks. [4]

Dementia

Dogs can get forgetful, just like humans, but the powerful antioxidants in turmeric can prevent neurodegenerative conditions.

Liver Protection

Turmeric is known to detoxify the body, thus lowering the stress on the liver. [5]

Cataracts

Regular use of turmeric can lower oxidative stress in the retina and prevent the development of cataracts.

Others

Turmeric, being an antibacterial, can also be helpful for dogs in order to treats cysts and tumors.

Turmeric Dosage for Dogs

If you are planning on giving turmeric to your dog, it is important to do so in the proper dosage. You can mix the powder and oil into their food, make a light turmeric gravy, or purchase turmeric capsules and supplements for your pooch. The easiest and most effective way to increase turmeric in your dog’s diet is to create a golden paste.

  • Step 1: Combine 1/2 cup of turmeric with 2 cups of water.
  • Step 2: Add 1/3 cup of coconut oil and 2 teaspoons of cracked black pepper.
  • Step 3: Stir thoroughly and then pour over your dog’s normal food.

Side Effects

While there are many benefits, turmeric can also have some unwanted side effects, including the following:

  • Lower blood sugar level
  • Infertility
  • Iron deficiency

If your dog has gallbladder problems, using turmeric can exacerbate the issue, and some dog owners have reported bruising on their pooch when using this herbal dietary addition. If your dog has a pre-existing condition, speak with your vet before adding turmeric to their diet.
