The health benefits of lavender essential oil include its ability to remove nervous tension, relieve pain, disinfect scalp and skin, enhance blood circulation and treat respiratory problems. Lavender has the Latin name Lavare, which means “to wash”, due to its aroma which fills a room spread with lavender oil with a clean aroma.

Lavender oil is extracted mostly from the flowers of the plant, primarily through steam distillation. The flowers of lavender are fragrant in nature and have been used for making potpourris since years.

Lavender essential oil has been traditionally used in making perfumes due to its aroma. The oil is very useful in aromatherapy and many aromatic preparations are made using lavender oil. Lavender oil blends well with many other essential oils including cedarwood, pine, clary sage, geranium, and nutmeg. Today, lavender essential oil is used in various forms including aromatherapy oil, gels, infusion, lotion, and soaps.

The various health benefits of lavender essential oil include:

Nervous System: Lavender essential oil has a calming scent which makes it an excellent tonic for the nerves and helps in treating migraines, headaches, anxiety, depression, nervous tension and emotional stress. Its refreshing aroma removes nervous exhaustion and restlessness and increases mental activity.

Sleep: Lavender essential oil induces sleep and hence it is often recommended for insomnia.

Pain Relief: Lavender essential oil is also an excellent remedy for various types of pains including those caused by sore muscles, tense muscles, muscular aches, rheumatism, sprains, backache and lumbago. Massage with lavender oil provides relief from pain in the joints.

Urine Flow: Lavender essential oil is good for urinary disorders as it stimulates urine production. It helps in restoring hormonal balance and reduces cystitis or inflammation of the urinary bladder. It also reduces any associated cramps.

Respiratory Disorders: Lavender oil is extensively used for various respiratory problems including throat infections, flu, cough, cold, asthma, sinus congestion, bronchitis, whooping cough, laryngitis, and tonsillitis. The oil is either used in the form of vapor or applied on the skin of neck, chest and back. It is also added in many vaporizers and inhalers used for cold and coughs.

Skin Care: The health benefits of lavender oil for the skin can be attributed to its antiseptic and antifungal properties. It is used to treat various skin disorders such as acne, wrinkles, psoriasis, and other inflammations. It heals wounds, cuts, burns, and sunburns rapidly as it aids in the formation of scar tissues. Lavender oil is added to chamomile to treat eczema.

Hair Care: Lavender essential oil is useful for the hair as it can be very effective on lice and lice eggs or nits.

Blood Circulation: Lavender essential oil is also good for improving blood circulation. It lowers blood pressure and is used for hypertension.

Digestion: Lavender oil is useful for digestion as it increases the mobility of the intestine. The oil also stimulates the production of gastric juices and bile and thus aids in treating indigestion, stomach pain, colic, flatulence, vomiting and diarrhea.

Immunity: Regular use of lavender essential oil provides resistance to diseases.

Other health benefits of lavender essential oil include its ability to treat leucorrhea. It is also effective against insect bites. The oil is also used to repel mosquitoes and moths. You will find many mosquito repellents containing lavender oil as one of the ingredients.

As with many other essential oils, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using lavender essential oil. It is also recommended that diabetics stay away from lavender oil. It may also cause allergic reactions to people having sensitive skin. Some people may also witness nausea, vomiting and headaches due to usage of lavender oil.

Delight S  - Safe for Kids! Lavendar Oil Antibiotic 2010-03-08 20:32:48
Instead of taking an antibiotic when sick, put one drop of Lavender Essential Oil in about 2 ounces of water (or juice) and have child or adult take it once a day. Worked miraculously for my son when he caught the swine flu.

my 15 yr old daughter has been advised to use lavender oil as spritzer spray for her acne,at bedtime but what do I use to make the spritzer and what porportions ? as she does tend to have a sensitive skin.
Kylie  - insect bites 2009-11-18 23:42:29
Our family recently enjoyed a wonderful holiday at Woodgate beach. As it was the first time for my for my eight month old daughter, Scarlett, I worried about sand flys. My worry stems from the fact that I seem to attract them and react badly so am afraid she might be the same. When I visited the chemist to ask advise I was informed that there was nothing on the market that she could use but if I mixed a little lavender oil in with her moisturiser that would deter them. I used the advice successfully but now wish to confirm whether or not use of lavender oil is advised in children so young before I continue its use.
andrew langham  - mosquitoe repellent ; simple home made 2009-11-10 11:27:35
Lavender oil is obtained by distillation from the blue lavender flower heads it is a mild solvent similar in action to glycerine when applied to the skin it dissolves lactic acid and skin urea salt which mosquitoes always are attracted to the sent of body odour containing these substances ie lactic acid and urea salts and urine and menstrual fluids; if you are going to a mosquitoe area, example river valleys ,marsh lands, in hot countries take malaria tablets from your gp doctor, and always wash in mild carbolic soap and apply lavender oil/water all over your body and hair twice a day use a bottle spray is best make the solution your self;
buy lavender flowers from a garden centre, they can order it for you, from lavender flower grower/supplier

then put the cut up lavender flower heads in 2 pints of warmed glycerine solution, which you can buy from the chemist shop even if you have to buy several small bottles, believe me it

I bought a very small bottle of lavendar oil for the first time (know nothing about it) for the purpose of repelling clothes moths. The bottle comes with a strict warning not to use directly from the bottle. I have been researching and cannot find any article that explains what I can dilute it with and in what concentration. Anybody? Thanks.
sum1 2009-09-24 12:45:03
You're supposed to dilute essential oils with carrier oils before using them on the skin because they can cause serious allergic reactions for some people. Some examples of carrier oils are coconut and olive oil however, lavender oil is one of the few essential oils that are supposed to be safe to use undiluted. The warning is probably there just in case but if you're worried you can just mix a few drops with a carrier oil and it should be fine. Also, if you're not using it on your skin then there shouldn't be any need to dilute it.
jodi  - what to mix it with 2009-12-19 18:12:44
you can mix it with almond oil, i use this as my body lotion for the day. You can find this at your health food store make sure its the skin care and not for cooking.

im glad to say my scalp issues are over, my scalp is completely healed now and have never felt so great since the last 6 months, thanks to the use of aloe vera plant plus hair hair shampoo, my scalp was healed within a week of using it. i now have an aloe vera plant in the kitchen for whatever needs, its also good for the skin, hair growth. i didnt know until i used, you can get a cheap plant from not knotcuts at just £5.99 a pot and shampoo from tescos(£4,99)
Elainea  - scalp treatment 2009-12-15 09:16:43
Hello: Can you tell me exactly the type of store (not knotcuts) where you bought the aloe vera plant? Was it a home garden center? What city and state did you buy it? I searched the internet and could not find the name given in your message. Is the shampoo an aloe vera shampoo?

I'm glad you are no longer suffering since using aloe vera. My great aunt use to put the juice from the aloe vera plant on her scalp and her hair grew. I totally forgot about the plant. I desperately need the plant as well because my hairline in the front is thin and I'm sure it will grow back if I use the plant.

Thank you for your assistance. Please respond to my questions. Take Care!
Aquamarine  - Migraine 2009-08-19 12:27:18
Hi, I suffer from terrible migraine....I've tried medicines but still I have worse headaches....I was just wondering if this lavender oil could help me relieve my headache? or is there any other essential oil that could ease my headache?

thanks(: great site by the way!
barb  - migraines 2009-08-26 08:29:10
hi - I too used to suffer from chronic migraines for more than 25 years, I think lavender can help to relax tension, but mky migraines were finally cured by a series of visits to a cranial osteopath. As a result I have had no migraines for 6 months after suffering on a weekly basis for many years.

Good luck with your search for a remedy - I hope you find something that works for you.
Jason 2009-09-27 20:53:28
I'm not sure if you've investigated, but 80% of migraine headaches are bite related. Especially, if the headaches begin in the temples and/or back of the neck. There is a reason that only women get migraines. Have you ever known a man to complain of migraines? I haven't. So many pain management doctors don't realize this. "When all you've got is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." Things to look for? In addition to the area of the head affected, other signs are gum pocketing, gum recession, wear on your teeth (espeically the front teeth). Look for a bite specialist (usually a dentist) and inlcude their opinion in your decision on how to treat. Good luck.
Mitch  - Sir 2009-10-19 09:14:38
When you make an absolute stament such as "only women get migraines",it's hard to take you seriously. I'm a 52yo male who "knows" he suffers from migraines. 90% are in the AM but the others are mid-day. They start at the base of my skull then progress to the front. Imitrex is my current treatment but I am excited about trying essential oils. Jason,I'm sure you have great things to add, just don't "trip" yourself before you get started.
Janet 2009-11-06 16:40:47
Migraines are a vascular condition. You get them because the veins in your neck and head are swollen and they push upon your nerves. Lavender oil is helpful, as is peppermint oil. Migraines are usually hereditary. My brother has them and so does my mother. Currently my doctor has me on beta blockers which prevents the headaches. It is daily but it's the only thing that has worked, and I've tried them all.
Debra  - Migranes 2009-11-19 12:28:44
With all due respect, I must differ with your statement that only women get migranes. My son is 32 years old and has been dealing with migranes since he was about 10 years old. We have had cat scans ran and nothing shows up. I pray each night that we will find something to rid him of this excrutiating pain. You never know when he will get one. Sometimes he can go several weeks without having one. Other times, he may get one every week. They are so bad that he vomitts, his right arm and hand go numb and sometimes his speach is even messed up. I would appreciate any and all advice from anyone. Thank you.
Dolly S 2010-03-08 20:52:47
It pains me to hear about your son because this used to be me. I used to get horrific migranes that would make me extremely ill. The only thing that worked for me was to change my diet completely. It was rough at first, but it has saved my life and now I can finally function.
Whatever he does, he should stay away from High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFSC)with is extremely bad for the human body despite the new commericals. It is a highly processed fructose that the body does not react well to. Small amounts might be okay, but it is in everything! Ketchup, BBQ, Spagetti Sauce, Mayonaisse, bread, I'm shocked it's not added in toothpaste! He should also stay away from Monosodium Glutemate (MSG). This is a natural flavor enhancer and preservative that is very toxic to the human body. MSG also occurs naturally in Soy. ANYTHING that says SOY ANYTHING contains MSG. Also, anything that says, Natural Flavor, Idolyzed Yeast, and more. MSG has very many side effects and are different for everyone....
Heather Stone  - migraines 2009-08-26 08:51:03
try a mixture of Lavender, Basil and Peppermint. Basil alone is great for migranes.
John Rasmussen  - Mr 2009-08-30 12:04:40
I have had migraines my whole life ( I am now 48), and I usually wake up with them in the morning. I read about essential oils a few weeks ago, and have found that a few drops of lavender on my pillow and a 50-50 mixture of lavender and chamomile in a lamp allows me to wake up pain-free 90% of the time. This is the best results I have found, and I have spent a lot of time and money on different approaches to control the headaches.
Jason 2009-09-27 21:01:40
Very rare to see men with true migraines. True migraines begin down the centerline of the scalp and, as I understand it, are caused by the swelling of the dura beneath the scalp which presses against the skull. If your headaches are in the temples or back of the neck, these are classic bite headache symptoms. The reason they're worse in the morning is that everyone clenches during REM sleep. I think if you can find a dentist to do a bite "equilibration", especially using a device called a Tekscan, I'll bet your headaches will finally be gone. Do your due diligence, the internet is great for that.
Kareth  - Migraine 2009-09-01 04:47:35
Yes, lavender is great for headaches. So are rosemary & peppermint.
The latter 2 have to be diluted with a carrier oil such as almond, grapeseed, olive, jojoba or hazelnut.
Migraines are caused from a lack of vitamin B2. A lady suffered from migrains at least twice a month until she started taking B2 supplements. Now she doesn't have them at all. I would take B-Complex if I were you and each more organic leafy green vegetables.
Good luck!
michelle  - migraine relief 2009-09-08 19:47:30
I suffer from migraines too, sinus-related. I use a mixture on a diffuser of pine(2 drops), peppermint(2) and eucalyptus(4). I find this works amazingly well if I put it in my bathroom and take a hot shower. Again, mine are sinus related and this is a decongesting mixture.
Brady  - ringworm in cats 2009-08-13 16:14:23
I am fostering kittens for the SPCA and they developed ringworm. My boss sells YL essential oils and made me a mixture of lavender oils and lemongrass to use on the cats and kittens. Is this safe? I've read conflicting information on this over the internet. My vet is unfamiliar with essential oils so she is no help. I have the oils and want the ringworm to go away ASAP but I don't want to kill the cats. Any personal experience, positive or negative?
askie  - diabetic 2009-08-05 01:46:48
Can you tell me why should diabetics "stay away from Lavender oil"? The same phrase has been repeated in all the sites covering the benefits of the Lavender oil.

My mom whose diabetic is a lavender fan and I got her a beautiful bottle of Lavender oil essence from Provence-France and now I read that it is not good for her. Could you please elaborate why? Thanks
Vijay Manocha  - Pure Lavender oil 2009-08-01 11:35:18
I have some fresh and pure Lavender oil absolutely organic from Himalayas natural crop of this year, only limited quantity for a short period.
