As with most other hair lice remedies, the use of petroleum jelly is intended to suffocate the head lice and make them easy to remove from the scalp. Petroleum jelly is thick and viscous, and prevent the head lice from breathing, which is obviously fatal. After applying petroleum jelly and letting it sit in the hair for a few hours, or even overnight, the head lice can be scrubbed out with a good shower, followed by removing any of the remaining lice with a fine-tooth comb. Some infestations are more difficult to get rid of, so be sure to monitor your scalp for a few days following this home remedy.
