Selenium has a very powerful effect on the thyroid gland and the production of hormones throughout the body. For people suffering from Graves’ Disease, this sort of thyroid regulation is important for controlling the symptoms of the disease. Selenium deficiency has been directly linked to malfunctions of the thyroid gland, so while many people contract Graves’ Disease through genetics, there are those that can be afflicted by lacking this essential mineral. Foods that are rich in selenium include Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, tuna, wheat germ and mushrooms.
