Characteristics of Organic Coconut Oil Print E-mail

Like all other organic products, organic coconut oil is free of chemicals and is therefore claimed to be healthier. It has enhanced benefits over coconut oil.

Most of the organic coconut oils have some or all of the following characteristics:

  • Coconuts: The coconuts used for extraction of oil are produced using organic means without the use of any chemicals. Some companies use traditional varieties of coconuts instead of the hybrid varieties.
  • Extraction: Oil extraction is done using mechanical means. An expeller is the most common equipment used for this purpose.
  • Refining: No chemical refining is carried out.
  • Bleaching: The color of the oil is generally not changed.
  • Hydrogenation: Some manufacturers do not carry out hydrogenation, which is addition of hydrogen to the oil.
  • Odorizing: Organic coconut oil is rarely de-odorized.
  • Heating: Heating to high temperatures results in loss of properties of the oil. Hence manufacturers of organic coconut oil ensure that the entire extraction, processing and packaging of the oil is done at low temperatures.
  • Certifications: Further, many manufacturers get certifications from different bodies that grant organic seals.
