Health Benefits of Cinnamon Oil Print E-mail

Cinnamon is one of the most popular herbs and spices. Though cinnamon oil has numerous health benefits, it often causes irritations and allergic reactions. Therefore people prefer to use cinnamon directly instead of using the oil. This article, therefore, provides health benefits of cinnamon. The general benefits of cinnamon oil are given at the bottom.

Cinnamon Bark Cinnamon, which has the scientific name Cinnamomum zeylanicum, has originated from tropical Asia, especially Sri Lanka and India. Now the shrub is grown in almost every tropical region of the world. The herb, owing to its vast medicinal uses, had found a prominent position in traditional medicines, especially Ayurveda (the traditional Indian medicinal system). Traditionally cinnamon, due to its medicinal properties, has been used in many cultures for treating a variety of health disorders including diarrhea, arthritis, menstrual cramps, heavy menstruation, yeast infections, colds, flu, and digestive problems.

Now it is being used all over the world for treating a variety of health disorders including respiratory problems, skin infections, blood impurity, menstruation problems, heart disorders, etc. The most widely used part of cinnamon is its bark.

Good blood circulation also ensures oxygen supply to the body cells leading to higher metabolic activity. You significantly reduce the chance of getting a heart attack by regularly consuming cinnamon.
  • Infections: Due to its antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties, it is effective on external as well as internal infections. It helps in destroying germs in the gall bladder and bacteria in staph infections.

  • Diabetes: Cinnamon has the ability to control blood sugar. Diabetics find it very useful as cinnamon aids them in using less insulin. Research has shown that it is particularly very helpful for patients suffering from type2 diabetes. Type2 diabetes patients are not able to use their insulin levels properly. Researchers at the US Department of Agriculture's Human Nutrition Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland, studied the effect of various food substances including cinnamon on blood sugar. They found that a water-soluble polyphenol compound called MHCP which is abundant in cinnamon synergistically acted with insulin and helped in the better utilization of insulin.
  • Heart Diseases: It is believed that the calcium and fiber present in cinnamon provides protection against heart diseases. Including a little cinnamon in the food helps those suffering from coronary artery disease and high blood pressure.
  • Colon Cancer: It also improves the health of colon and thereby reducing the risk to colon cancer.
  • Mouth freshener: Cinnamon is used in chewing gums as it is a good mouth freshener and removes bad breath.

Cinnamon is very effective for indigestion, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea and flatulence. Due to its carminative properties, it is very helpful in removing gas from the stomach and intestines. It also removes acidity, diarrhea and morning sickness. It is therefore often referred to as a digestive tonic.
  • Respiratory problems: Cinnamon helps in cold, flu, influenza, sore throat and congestion.
  • Menstruation: Cinnamon is effective in providing relief from menstrual discomfort and cramping.

Cinnamon is diuretic in nature and helps in secretion and discharge of urine. It is also aphrodisiac and is believed to arouse sexual desire.

Benefits of Cinnamon Oil
Cinnamon oil is obtained from the bark and leaves of cinnamon tree. Cinnamon oil does have applications in aromatherapy; however, it is not as popular as other essential oils such as pine essential oil, basil essential oil, rosemary essential oil and lavender essential oil.

The benefits of cinnamon oil include the following:

  • Cooking: Many people add cinnamon oil while cooking. Cinnamon oil obtained from the leaves contains a compound named cinnamaldehyde, which is an excellent flavoring agent.
  • Room Freshener: The pleasant aroma of cinnamon oil makes it a very effective as a room freshener. It is often added in potpourris.
  • Eliminating Mosquitoes: Cinnamon oil is a good mosquito repellent. Research has now proved that cinnamon oil is very effective in killing mosquito larvae. The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (a renowned scientific journal) has reported the research conducted at the National Taiwan University. Apart from the leaves of cinnamon, its bark is also a good source of cinnamaldehyde, which is an active mosquito killing agent. This research has paved the way for finding an environmentally solution for solving the global menace problem.

Many companies producing cinnamon oil claim that it is a good antibacterial and antifungal agent making it very effective on infections. It also helps in blood circulation and acts as a sexual stimulant. Research has also proved that cinnamon oil obtained from the leaves and twigs of cinnamon can be used for controlling mites in honey bees.

Cinnamon oil should not be consumed internally. Further, it can have adverse effects on the skin, if used topically in concentrated form and therefore it should be used in diluted form. Moreover before using cinnamon oil, it should be tested if it suits your skin. Hence apply only a small quantity of cinnamon oil initially and check if you get any allergic reaction. Do not apply cinnamon oil on the face and sensitive areas.

Cinnamon blends well with various essential oils and hence it is added to many aromatherapy preparations. It enhances the effectiveness of other herbs and essential oils and thus speeds up treatment of herbal remedies. Further many herbs have an unpleasant taste. Cinnamon or cinnamon oil is added to herbal preparations to make them taste better. The oil blends well with other essential oils such as lemon essential oil, rosemary essential oil, geranium essential oil, lavender essential oil and cardamom essential oil.

Cara  - cinnamon helps people quit smoking   |2009-06-17 07:24:59
I help people to quit smoking for a living. Using cinnamon bark as a replacement has worked wonders for many
people. Ex-smokers can breathe through it, sucking in spicy cinnamon flavored air. Chewing on cinnamon has
also helped my daughter to stop biting her nails, and helped me to stop drinking diet sodas. Cinnamon is a
fantastic replacement for many hand-to mouth habits, stimulates the brain, and provides a nice sensory
experience (smokers crave this). Quitting smoking? Give it a try.

holli  - lips   |2009-06-18 06:16:58
I have seen a few lips glosses that contain it now. my lips are tiny and this helps *slightly*. There is one
from target called "sexy mother-pucker" but for my money a teeny dab of the oil (if your mouth can
take it)does much more. When I can, I personally just rub the oil from lemon peel on mine and exfoliate. Works
way better than my lip gloss.

Linda  - Allergies and Eczema   |2009-01-17 20:19:35
My daughter Christine suffers with severe eczema. She does have allergies
(weeds, molds, grass, ragweed, dustmites, shellfish.) She has seen 3 allergists and 3 dermatologists. She does
allergy shots every week. Her main problem now is her skin. She itches alot. We think that the winter weather
is the main culprit (dry skin). All the lotions and medication don't seem to work. Doctors always resort to
giving her steroids. We only do this when it gets out of hand. We are desperate to do this in a healthy way.
Please if you have any suggestions we would be very grateful.
Thank you

HI Linda, My child suffered the same way as your child. We are blessed because we did find help for her.
I
will be more then glad to share what worked for our child.
Purchase these items:
RoBathol bath oil
(online)/or your drugist will order it
Eucerine in the Jar - not the lotion in the bottle
(perscription -
Kenelog cream - only for a while
Bathe daily in lukewarm water not hot(drying) for at least 20 to 30 minutes.
Do not use a towel to dry...........air dry
then apply a mixture of the eucerine and kenalog to the areas
that are irrated. only dress in 100% cotton that has been washed in dreft detergent.(This is the only
detergent we washed her clothes and towels - washclothes etc. in. Until her itching was under control she
took benadry to sleep. Remember exzema is a visous circle, you itch, you scratch you irritate.............you
itch, etc.........

Her doctor said until we calm the skin and break the cycle to give her benadryl. We did
and it worked. now the key is to keep the skin well lubricated with the Eurcerin and she takes a lukewarm
bath in Robathol still. It has been years and this is just her lifestyle and easy. Once her skin was cleared
we switched to over the counter cortaid to mix with the cream and often just the Eurcerin. God Bless and I
hope this helps your child. Also my daughter has the same allergies as you child. Good Luck, Tina
Jamila  - Almond Oil   |2009-03-27 09:22:24
Almond Oil works very well in relieving eczema.
Give her plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and be sure
that she is well hydrated--spring water.
Also, you may want to consider eliminating certain foods from her
diet in order to determine if the eczema is being brought on by an allergy--bleached flour perhaps.
Aubry's
organic plant based baby soaps and lotions are also effective.

Good Luck.
Please keep us updated.

I have read that cinnamon can stabilize blood sugar and help lower cholesterol. Also, that the oil is more
effective than powder. Has anyone actually taken cinnamon, and had their blood sugar and cholesterol,
triglycerides, LDL and HDL checked, after taking it for a while, and found a reduction in their numbers?

My leg muscles and joints have been hurting me for about 3 months. I done some research on the health benefits
of taking cinnamon mixed with honey.....I used the recipe for arthritis benefits. I do not know for certain as
to whether or not this mixture of honey and cinnamon has eased the pain to almost nil, or not....but it's
going away. My legs had hurt me so much at night, that I had to sleep with a pillow between my legs to get any
relif from the pain.....and I have only been using the honey and cinnamon mixture for just one week. If my
relief is really attributed to this honey and cinnamon mixture, I will be telling the world's arthritis
suffers about it. But.....befure I nake any hasty moves in this respect, I am going to stay on honey and
cinnamon and will know for certain on down the road if I have found a miracle for my arthritis pain.
Laura   |2008-12-15 02:19:00
Cinnamon is said to be used in many things medicinal or not...but the most readily used is the powder
substance as a spice.

some times in the tom's toothpaste people are more allergic to the mint then the
cinnamon but getting a simple test for allergies would solve anything to know if you are allergic to
something. Plus if all these symptoms do occur there is probably a clause on the box that says to discontinue
the usage and speak to a medical professional. I would think there maybe something else you are allergic to if
this has never happened before with cinnamon as a spice.

holli  - cinnamon and weight loss   |2009-06-18 06:08:10
I started taking cinnamon with my starchiest meals of the day (dried-inside capsule) I'm not diabetic but I
still keep blood sugar in mind, and this helps to regulate blood sugars. Doesn't mean it's magic, you still
need to choose complex carbs and other healthy choices, but the cinnamon was a metabolic booster for me and I
lost weight a little quicker.

(as always, all things in moderation, and check with your Dr.)
Sunil Shegaonkar  - cinnamon oil - good or bad   |2008-08-11 19:50:19
Cinnamon is strong and hot spice, and the oil is the extract of the same.
I would expect the very strong
reaction with the oil; as experienced by few people & who posted their comments here.

All spices needs to
taken in small quantities, and they may induce adverse side effects if consumed in large doses.
However I
would not recommend using cinnamon oil directly in to your recipe or something like that. It may be a
promising medicine for some indication and needs research in that direction.
Nobody can say for certain why
few people are allergic to cinnamon, but doses incorporated in tooth paste may be exceeding their tolerance
level.
One is certain it is promising spice with many many health benefit, all should take it in the food in
small quantities from to time.

I tested a wooden cinnamon/tea tree tooth pick at our local better health store and I have a horrible burning
feeling on my face around my mouth/swelling....hives i think and my lips still feel as though there is

Cameron M  - Cinnamon oil very powerful   |2008-07-15 11:20:29
I searched for the effects of cinnamon oil after developing over eight painful little blisters (canker sores)
on the inside of my mouth and on my tongue. It is so painful that I could not read a bedtime story to my son
tonight.

As it turns out, I had suspected my new tube of Tom's Cinnamint Toothpaste of being the cause, and
now after reading the health descriptions and warnings, as well as the previous post by "fountainpen"
- I have definitively identified what happened.

It's a pity that my body has a reaction to Tom's Cinnamint
Toothpaste because I truly enjoyed using the product.

Kind regards,
Cameron
JC Cannon   |2008-07-17 21:08:57
I too have a serious reaction to cinnamon oil found in "red hots", cinnamon breath mints and other
items flavored with the oil. Cinnamon rolls laden with gobs of cinnamon powder is okay. That is likely due to
the fact that powdered cinnamon is not cinnamon at all, it is cassia, an entirely different plant.
My allergy
to the oil perplexed several dentists and medics. They all treated me for the dreaded "thrush"
disease.

fountainpen  - Allergic Reaction to Cinnamon Oil in Toothpaste   |2008-06-21 21:36:14
The health benefits as listed in this article are probably very true. However, you should pay attention to the
adverse effects as well.

I recently purchased several tubes of Tom's Cinnamint Toothpaste. A few days ago
after using a fresh tube, I noticed that my mouth started experiencing a very dry burning reaction. At first,
I thought it was a food allergy. Yet, there was nothing in my diet that had changed. I kept thinking that
perhaps I have developed a new food allergy. After a few days I started wondering if it was my toothpaste. The
symptoms got worse. My tongue now has a blistery (small bumps) rash. It hurts to move it around. My lips are
very dry. The corners of my mouth are cracked. It feels like I drank a cup of scalding hot water.

After doing
a little research, I found out that it is the cinnamon oil in the product that is suspect. Cinnamon in it's
dry powdery form doesn't seem to have that effect. But, cinnamon oil (which is concentrated) produce a
volatile reaction.

Hi Sri Ram,

Cinnamon is definitely not good for health if you eat it in large quantities.

About 1 g
daily should be sufficient for regular use. Ofcourse, if you intend to consume it for any specific desease,
please check with your doctor.

Kiran
