Home remedies for backache include raw potato, lemon juice, chebulic myrobalan, cabbage and milk, vitamin C, garlic, bishop weed, whole oat and vinegar, mint and turpentine oil, glucose or honey, khas khas grass and sugar candy, proper diet, fomentation, yoga and correct posture etc. Backache refers to the constant mild or chronic pain in the back portion of one’s body. It occurs due to several reasons including irregular lifestyle, food habits or diseased conditions. It can be treated effectively by various home remedies.

Backache refers to the constant pain felt in the back portion especially the middle and lower back areas. The kind of lifestyle, working conditions, sitting on computer for long hours, food habits etc. are responsible for backache. It has been found that it may occur due to improper posture for long hours. Wearing high heels, also results in strenuous stretching of muscles ending up in backache. Some of the other causes of backache include carrying heavy things on back, pregnancy and certain diseased conditions like kidney disorders, irregularity in menstrual cycle, meningitis, obesity, influenza, osteoporosis or arthritis.

Symptoms
Backache is characterized by following symptoms-

  • Pain in lower or middle back portion is felt
  • Pain sometimes spread to hips and waist
  • Pain felt between hips and upper legs
  • At times, it becomes to difficult to alter from one position to the other
  • When backache is due to spondylosis, the spine becomes inflexible

Backache can be prevented as well as cured by taking a few remedial measures. Some of the home remedies have been quoted below:

  • Raw Potato: Raw potato is spread over a soft cloth and can be used to wrap the portion of back, undergoing pain. It has been widely performed for lower backache problems and has shown promising results.
  • Lemon Juice: Extract juice from lemon by squeezing it and add half teaspoon of salt to it. This can be applied over paining region and has fast relieving action. It is also one of the easiest home remedies for backache.
  • Chebulic Myrobalan: Fruit of chebulic myrobalan which is called as ‘haritaki’ in hindi have been found to give great relief in backache if consumed after meals.
  • Cabbage and Milk: One of the easily performed home remedy is by boiling cabbage leaves in milk till a thich jelly like paste is formed. This is spread on a cloth and can be used to cover the portion undergoing pain.
  • Vitamin C: It has been observed that vitamin C uptake can result in quick relief from back pain. Vitamin C is found abundantly in citrus fruits and thus one should make it a habit to consume a citrus fruit daily. The effect may be noticed withn a day or two.
  • Garlic: Consumption of 3 to 4 cloves of garlic are related with decrease in backache. 8 to 10 cloves of garlic are fried in mustard oil or coconut oil, and mashed to get a viscous paste. This can also be applied on the back part which is paining to get immediate relief.
  • Bishop Weed: Bishop Weed also referred to as ‘ajwain’ in Hindi can also be used in backache problems. A handful of bishop weed is tied in a piece of cloth and tied properly. This bundle is then dry heated over a container. When warm, this can be removed from container and applie over the paining parts. This gives fast relief from back pains and has been followed over ages.
  • Whole Oat and Vinegar: Prepare a mash of whole oat in vinegar and boil it. Apply this hot mixture on the painful area.
  • Mint and Turpentine Oil: Oil of mint and turpentine can also be used as a home remedy for relieving backache. Theses should be rubbed on the sites of pain. They are present in most of the pain relief ointments.
  • Glucose or Honey: It is also found that drinking glucose with luke warm water or honey, are beneficial in pain relief.
  • Khas Khas Grass and Sugar Candy: A mixture of khas khas and sugar is mixed
  • Proper Diet: it is advisable that an individual with back pain must have balanced diet. Milk, juice, sprouts and fruits must be taken regularly each day. Steamed vegetables like cauliflower, carrot, tomato, spinach and cabbage should also find place in your food chart. Spicy, oily and heavy foods, tea, coffee, sweet dishes and curd must be eliminated as soon as the backache is observed.
  • Fomentation: As per Bio-Medicine, fomentation or hot treatment have always shown positive results in alleviating backache. Take a cloth and dip it in warm water. This cloth can now be applied on the back parts to give immediate relief in the paining areas.
  • Yoga: It has been found that yogic asanas are the best in completely curing backache. Certain asanas like shalabhasan, uttanpadasan, bhujangasan and shavasan can be performed regularly to eliminate the ailment.
  • Correct Posture: Maintaining correct posture during long hours of strenuous work as well as sleeping is advisable. Person complaining for backache must go on regular walks and perform exercise. This causes relaxation to the strained muscles and joints. One should strictly avoid wearing heels.
