Diarrhea: Causes, Symptoms, & Treatments

Diarrhea is nothing but a manifestation of improper functioning of the digestive system. There are two types of diarrhea; either acute or chronic. Diarrhea takes around 3-4 days to be cured, depending on the intensity of the impact caused by the disease or infection. The duration and severity may depend on a person’s health history as well. Sometimes, changing your diet can also help cure diarrhea.

Causes of Diarrhea

Diarrhea can be caused by a number of things, these include viral gastroenteritis, lactose intolerance, food poisoning, premenstrual syndrome, etc.

It can also be caused by a viral infection or bacteria consumed through contaminated food or water.

Another causing factor of diarrhea is the presence of excessive fluid in the intestine, which affects the bowel movements, leading to different types of diarrhea that vary from person to person.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, parasites, antibiotics, and diseases that affect the stomach or small intestine are all responsible for causing diarrhea.

Treatments & Home Remedies for Diarrhea

Some of the home remedies for diarrhea include the use of starchy liquids like barley water, coconut water, green tea, curds, yogurt, ginger, lemon juice, gooseberry, apple cider vinegar, cumin and fenugreek seeds mixture, and basil leaves in various forms. These home remedies for diarrhea can be effective on people at different rates, depending on the intensity and the cause of diarrhea.

Green Tea: All herbs are good for health in some way. Green tea is available in different flavors and everyone can consume it on a regular basis without the fear of any adverse side effects. It helps your internal system to function properly and also nourishes your skin and eyesight. In general, it is recommended to have green tea on a daily basis because it can soothe upset stomachs and reduce the severity and duration of diarrhea.

Curd/Yogurt: Just 2 bowls of curd can help cure diarrhea and is the best and most easily available remedy on the market.

Lime Juice: Lime juice is one of the best home remedies for diarrhea. You can drink lime juice in lukewarm water. You can also add honey for improved taste and it is a great diarrhea reliever. It can be consumed 2-3 times a day for the best results.

Barley / Coconut Water: As these are starchy liquids and are quite thick in quality, they help reduce the excessive fluid in the intestine to excrete. Moreover, it helps calm your stomach thus reduce any burning sensations. Intake of these liquids should be every 5 hours or 2-3 times a day, depending on the severity of diarrhea.

Ginger: Ginger is a natural remedy and can be used in your daily diet as well. You can take a small piece of ginger, smash or grate it, and mix it with one teaspoon of honey to add sweetness to it. Be sure not to drink water immediately after having this mixture.

Fruits and Vegetables: High fiber vegetables and fruits should be avoided. Also stay away from alcohol and caffeine until your diarrhea is cured. Apple juice and dairy products, except curd, should also be avoided, as they can worsen diarrhea. Eat good and healthy food and avoid fatty substance as well. Brown rice can also help reduce the symptoms by absorbing excess water and adding bulk back to your stool.

Honey: In case you choose to use honey, make sure to utilize raw honey. Take one teaspoon of honey, add a pinch of pepper powder to it and eat it in one bite. Make sure you do not drink water for at least half an hour after consuming this for the best results.

How to Prevent Diarrhea?

Some basic precautions should be kept in mind, including avoiding eating street food in certain countries and always washing your hands properly before having food. The best preventative method is to consume food stored and prepared at home as often as possible.

Generally, diarrhea is not very harmful, but it can signal a more serious problem and become dangerous at times if it continues for a long time, particularly since it is very dehydrating. Consulting a doctor is the suggested course of action, in case diarrhea is accompanied by some additional symptoms like severe pain in the rectum or abdomen, blood in the stool, fever, diarrhea that lasts for more than three days, or dehydration symptoms. Special care should be taken for diarrhea when children are the affected patients.

You usually don't have much warning when Diarrhea bursts on the scene and it can take a while to treat it but one thing you can do that is immediate and very helpful it to have a Hand Bidet Sprayer by your Toilet. With these you can wash with water instead of rubbing yourself raw with Toilet Paper(or running out!) and you can also use it to spray some water up inside(like a mini enema) to get truly clean...inside and out.
