Cancer is a disease that is characterized by presence of continuously dividing cells. Initially localized at a point called tumor, later these cells distribute in the body via blood or lymphatic system and eventually death results. Cancer is stimulated due to several external or internal stimuli. Various kinds of cancer show symptoms in different ways. Certain home remedies exist which aim at preventing cancer, while several other focus on the activation of immune system. There are also certain kinds of food that are beneficial to be taken by patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Cancer is a diseased state wherein malignant growth of cells occurs that in simple terms can be stated as continuous division of cells. This appears as lump and if not detected at early stages, it might lead to cancer in other parts of body via the blood and lymphatic system eventually ending up in death of the individual.
Cancer can be of different types on the basis of their origin or mode of cell growth. Some of the widely occurring cancer types are:
• Leukemia: Cancer of blood forming cells
• Lymphoma: Cancer of immune system cells
• Carcinoma: Cancer of the skin or outer cover forming tissues
• Sarcoma: Cancer of the supportive tissues like cartilage, blood vessel etc.
• CNS Cancer: Cancer of the components of central nervous system like spinal cord and brain
Cells are induced to divide due to certain external or internal stimuli. In this state, if the growth of cells is localized, detectable, and can be removed, it is termed as the benign tumor. It can be treated or removed via surgery. If the cells have traveled to distant body parts and started the division again, it is a malignant tumor or cancer. This cannot be cured and ends up in death of individual.
Cancer shows various signs in case of each type of cancer, but in general, it is characterized by following symptoms:
• Unusual discharge from body
• Persistent cough
• Lumps at the place of tumor
• Change in bladder or bowel movements
• Slow healing of wounds
• Indigestion
• Change in shape or size of existing mole
Though not curable, cancers can be prevented by certain precautionary measures and a balanced lifestyle. Once it has begun, it cannot be stopped. However, by eating healthy nutritious food meant for cancer patients, one can ward off incoming pathogens and activate their immune system to fight against the cancer cells. An additional dietary regime is to be followed as the patient undergoes chemical or radiation therapy that tends to show various side effects like hair loss, nausea, etc.
Following home remedies are suggested for cancer patients:
• Broccoli: Broccoli is found to be good against certain kinds of colorectal cancers. These should be taken in the form of sprouts. It also contains isoflavones needed for prevention of cancer at early stages. It can be taken either as sprouts or as cooked vegetable and has activity against breast, prostate, colon and lung cancer.
• Wheatgrass: It is known to be advantageous to cancer patients. Wheatgrass taken in the form of juice or raw form is shown to retard the growth of cancer cells as demonstrated by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
