Black walnuts pose a threat to humans and livestock if their gardening is not planned carefully. It consists of an allelopathic chemical, Juglone that is regarded as a toxic compound. Within hours of contact, it can lead to the development of clinical symptoms. Early signs in horses include stiffness in the lower limbs and a reluctance to move which can result in colic, increased heartbeat, laminitis and swelling of the chest and neck.
