Hey, I had the same problem. My trainer helped me by just correcting my technique. Talk to a trainer about this.

Deadlifts do work your back and a bit of strain initially is common. But if your backache is serious, if you feel pain the next day or if your daily activities are getting affected, then you are doing something wrong. I suggest you talk to a trainer.
