Papaya is rich in carpaine. The increased amount of carpaine in the body reduces the pulse rate in a harmful way. This then affects the central nervous system. An enzyme known as papain found in papaya can cause respiratory problems, such as uneasy breathing, asthma, congestion in the nasal passages, wheezing and hay fever. Papaya enzymes also lead to miscarriage, carotenemia, and allergic reactions.
