Bleeding into the skin happens when one of the blood vessels bursts and then a small amount of blood escapes from the vessel into the body. It can happen for many reasons but the major one is generally an injury. The bleeding appears as small dots, which are known as petechiae, or may also be seen in the form of flat patches, called purpura.
